On Friday, June 12th at 8:20pm, Mathews Fire and Rescue, along with Mathews Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched to a residence on Plantation Rd in North in reference to a structure fire.

Fire personnel arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Deputies discovered forced entry had been made by someone other than fire personnel, and the home had been ransacked.

Mathews County Sheriff’s Office utilized their criminal investigators and assistance from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Investigation (Arson Specialist) for scene processing and evidence collection.

As of right now, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this as a Burglary and Arson.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in reviewing their surveillance footage for anything suspicious. The same request is being made for our community’s businesses along Route 14.

If you believe you have information or footage that can assist, please contact the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, specifically Investigator Rice at 804-729-5353.

While the investigation remains active, there is no indication that members of the public were indiscriminately targeted in this incident.

A reward of $25,000 has been offered for the Arrest and Conviction of the person(s) responsible for this incident.

In January of 2026, members of the leadership team from Salem Church of Mathews reported suspicious financial activity to the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office involving the church’s treasurer.

After conducting a lengthy investigation into the bank records, it was discovered that numerous checks had been forged and there was over $70,000.00 in suspected embezzled funds.

As a result, on June 9th, 2026, Kevin Charles Hogge, 55, of Diggs, VA was arrested and charged with the following felonies:
• Two counts of Embezzling U.S. Currency belonging to Salem Church of Mathews.
• Two counts of Forging and Uttering Checks.

Mr. Hogge was arrested at his home without incident. He has been released on a $5,000.00 unsecured bond.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the church members who came forward to assist with this investigation. Sheriff Edwards would also like to thank Investigator Rice for his dedication and the long hours he put in to bring this case to a close.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend much gratitude to the Virginia State Police and the HEAT Program for this year’s grant opportunity which funded Deputy Sean Coffey and Deputy Jake Wilson attending the 52nd annual Southeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators’ Vehicle Crimes Conference held at the Trump National Doral Hotel in Miami, Florida.
The deputies are in attendance this week attending courses on vehicular crimes and we look forward to hearing them share all of their newfound knowledge upon their return back to Mathews. They have asked to bring some cars back home with them… 🤔 We may be slightly jealous over them attending the Miami Marlins game ⚾️ and perhaps a little golfing 🏌️on the PGA Blue Monster golf course.
Welcome to Miami, Bienvenido a Miami🎶🎵
Wishing you both safe travels at the end of the week! 🌴
