The Matawan Police Department and Office of Emergency Management are currently monitoring a significant winter storm forecasted to affect our area beginning tomorrow evening into Monday, January 26th. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area in effect from 7pm Saturday, January 24th through 1pm Monday, January 26th. Current forecasts indicate snowfall amounts anywhere between six and sixteen inches and potential ice accumulation of 0.1-0.3 inches. Snowfall rates near 1-2” per hour are possible during the daytime period Sunday.
In addition to the potential major winter storm, dangerous cold is expected beginning this evening and continuing through next week. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for our area beginning tonight. Dangerously cold wind chills in the single digits or below zero are expected for several consecutive nights. Prolonged exposure to these cold temperatures could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.
Please remember that there is no parking on any Borough street when snow covered. Borough Ordinance also mandates the clearing of sidewalks within 12 hours of daylight after the snow has fallen. Any untreated surfaces will freeze and become slick.
In the event power outages occur due to severe weather, customers without power are encouraged to report their outage to JCP&L by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), clicking the “Report Outage” link on www.firsenergycorp.com, or by texting “OUT” to 544487.
The Matawan Police Department and Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the weather forecasts and provide updates if necessary. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. If traveling is absolutely necessary, please use extreme caution and be safe!
