🌊 Joint Water Rescue Training
This morning, members of the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Center Moriches Fire Department gave up part of their Sunday morning on a holiday weekend to participate in a joint water rescue drill.
While training within our own departments is important, working side-by-side with our mutual aid partners is just as critical. Drills like this give us the opportunity to learn how other departments operate, become familiar with their equipment and capabilities, and build the communication and teamwork that will be essential when we are called upon to work together at a real emergency.
Throughout the drill, members worked through a wide variety of water rescue scenarios, including:
• Single and multiple victims in the water
• Transferring unconscious victims from the water to a Jet Ski, Zodiac, and boat
• Deploying rescue swimmers from both boats and Jet Skis
• Multiple-victim rescue operations
• Radio communications involving multiple departments and apparatus
• A mass casualty scenario simulating a boat striking a pier, leaving numerous victims in the water with varying degrees of injury
These scenarios challenged members to work together, communicate effectively, and utilize the resources available to them in a coordinated response.
Both departments are members of the Moriches Bay Incident Response Team (MIRT), making this type of multi-department training especially important. The ability to operate seamlessly alongside our neighboring departments strengthens not only individual members, but the overall capability, preparedness, and resiliency of the entire team.
Most importantly, training like this doesn't happen without members willing to give their time. We appreciate everyone who spent part of their Sunday preparing for the day when these skills may be needed in the real world.
