The 2025-2026 Challenger Sports program celebrated a successful year with 49 middle school and high school student athletes participating in four sports and competing in 68 contests. There were also 46 buddies who supported the athletes throughout the year. Each student athlete was recognized with a certificate at the June 4 Board of Education meeting, as well as the buddies. Additional highlights from this year included fundraisers and a preseason pasta party organized by the Challenger Booster Club, and a presentation by coaches at the New York State School Board Association conference.

A Passing of the Flag and Freedom Between Generations at Massapequa High School

The promise carried forward by generations of Americans was handed to the future leaders at the inaugural Flags for Freedom ceremony at Massapequa High School on June 3. Veterans from local organizations presented American flags to dozens of soon-to-be graduates during a poignant program in the auditorium.

Senior James Benjamin led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Giavanna Pizzo singing the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Principal Barbara Lowell introduced veterans including their ranks and branches of service. There were remarks from Superintendent Dr. William Brennan, Board of Education President Kerry Wachter, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Brian Trapani and Operation Democracy President Margaret Marchand. William Colfer, past commander of VFW Post 7763, was the keynote speaker.

Across the Massapequa School District, activities and events are taking place to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The hope is for Flags of Freedom to become an annual ceremony to send seniors into their post-high school lives as engaged and informed citizens.

In speaking to the seniors, Dr. Brennan noted that they had recited the Pledge of Allegiance, hand over heart, to start off the school day approximately 2,330 times since beginning kindergarten. He asked them to hear the words differently from this point forward as a reminder that freedom comes with responsibility.

“The flag before us is more than fabric,” Dr. Brennan said. “It carries the story of America, the courage of those who served, the sacrifice of those who gave and the promise entrusted to every generation.”

Ms. Wachter spoke about the district’s mission “Creating leaders… one child at a time,” and said Flags for Freedom is an example of that mission coming to life. She added that a key component of education is preparing students to become responsible citizens.

In his keynote address, Mr. Colfer spoke of growing up in Massapequa but not really understanding the meaning of the flag until he joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War.

“It’s a great gift to serve your country,” he said to the seniors. “All of you are what we fought for and we are so proud of you.”

During a flag-folding demonstration, Mr. Colfer explained the meaning behind each of the 13 folds.

Local veterans began handing out folded flags to 85 seniors, beginning with students who have military commitments after high school, followed by relatives of the veterans on stage. Curriculum Associate for Social Studies Jason Gelardi read aloud the name of each senior who came up to accept a flag. The program closed with the playing of taps and student Chloe Legate singing “God Bless America.”

The Massapequa High School art department was proud to unveil its latest mural on the side of the Bagel Boss, adjacent to the high school parking lot. More than 70 students from art classes worked on it under the direction of teachers Paul Leone, Cristin O'Neill and Julie Thornton. Sophomore Bryce O'Toole had the winning design, chosen from six finalists and more than 100 entries. The 132-foot long, 19-foot tall mural took about a week to complete.

East Lake Elementary School fourth graders in Ms Abbate's class recently learned how to write a paragraph using the claim, evidence and reasoning framework. They were able to choose a question of their choice and support their opinions by making a clear claim, providing evidence from their own ideas and experiences, and explaining their thinking through reasoning. Students worked hard to turn their thoughts into organized and detailed paragraphs!

Birch Lane, Berner Students Explore 250 Years of History

Massapequa students are celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States of America through engaging history lessons and personal reflections.

First graders at Birch Lane Elementary School colored paper firecrackers and wrote responses based on different prompts, such as their favorite American heroes and why their futures are bright. Their heroes included George Washington and Betsy Ross. The colorful creations decorated a hallway bulletin board.

Teacher Vanessa Apfelbaum said her students also worked on American eagle craft projects, sharing the freedoms that they most treasure.

At Berner Middle School, eighth graders researched United States symbols, memorials and national parks. Each student created a sheet with a drawing and five sentences about his or her assigned subject. In class, they took part in a gallery walk to see all of the pieces and learn about these notable symbols and sites. The completed pieces were then used to create a “USA 250” collage in the windows in front of the school.

Activities at Berner and the elementary schools were from resources provided by the social studies department, under the leadership of Curriculum Associate Jason Gelardi.
