Today is Armed Forces Day.

This holiday is recognized annually on the third Saturday in May. Established in 1949, Armed Forces Day is meant to be a celebration of all military branches (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy and Space Force). It differs from Veterans Day in that it’s a day to honor those who are currently serving, and unlike Memorial Day the focus is on the living, not those lost. Each year, the White House releases an official proclamation of the day. In 2024, President Biden’s address read in part, “I call upon all Americans to display the flag of the United States at their homes and businesses on Armed Forces Day, and I urge citizens to learn more about military service by attending and participating in the local observances of the day.” (To read President Trump's proclamation, go to WhiteHouse.gov - it was not yet available as of the scheduling of this post.)

How are you recognizing and celebrating our Armed Forces today? Are you flying the American Flag, participating in a VFW Day of Service activity, co-hosting an event at your Post home, educating fellow citizens with a “Buddy”® Poppy display and distribution or visiting a military base with fellow Auxiliary members? Let us know! Send photos and details to [email protected] with the subject line Armed Forces Day.

We wish a happy Armed Services Day to all who serve! Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Hello! A reminder: In preparation of the Memorial Day Holiday, The Auxiliary of the Jean R. Anderson VFW Post 7309 will be placing flags at the headstones of our beloved Auxiliary members at the local cemeteries tomorrow, Sunday, May 17th.
We will be meeting at The Wooden Nickel ll in Dansville at 10AM for breakfast together before heading out to the cemeteries. This is such an honor for us to do each year as we remember and pay tribute to our members.
If you are able to join us, we would love to share this meaningful experience with you.

There are many patriotic holidays in addition to Independence Day, Flag Day and Veterans Day.

If you celebrate any of these lesser-known patriotic days at your Auxiliary and/or with your Post, let us know! We would love to share your stories and pictures on our social media and in our E-Newsletter. Email them to us at [email protected] with Auxiliaries in Action and/or the name of the holiday in the subject line.

Find this graphic (and a similar one with a list of patriotic birthdays, including those of each military branch) in MALTA under Member Resources: Americanism.

(Please note that this list cannot include every patriotic/American holiday and still fit on one page in a font easy enough to read; we have included as many as we could, but welcome suggestions for more or photos from events celebration others. Thank you!)

This week's Wisdom Wednesday quote is attributed to educator and science communicator Bill Nye and works on both a literal level and a metaphorical one, making it perfect for Earth Day: "To leave the world better than you found it, sometimes you have to pick up other people’s trash.”

Let's all work together to leave the world a little better each day!

The VFW Auxiliary offers cancer grants to members who are battling cancer.
Eligibility requirements:
• Applicant must be a member of the VFW Auxiliary for one (1) full year.
• Current dues must be paid before applying for a cancer grant.
• After twelve (12) months have passed from date of diagnosis or last treatment, application will not be accepted.
• A member is allowed two (2) grants during lifetime. Twelve (12) months must elapse between new diagnosis and/or treatment from date of first grant for a second application to be considered. Continuous treatment which lasts beyond the twelve (12) month period will qualify for a second grant.
• Application will be rejected if member has been deceased for longer than 30 days.

The grant amount is currently $550.00 and funds are paid directly to the member or, in the case of a deceased member, to their estate. Funds are dispersed 2-4 weeks following the acceptance and approval of the completed and signed application. Please read the instructions carefully before submitting an application. The most common reason an application is denied is due to missing information from either the member or physician.

To access the application, log into your MALTA account.
