Always assume a downed power line is energized and dangerous.

⚡ Stay at least 35 feet away from the line and anything it may be touching.
👨‍👩‍👧 Keep children and pets safely away from the area.
📞 Call 911 immediately to report a downed power line.
🚫 Never touch, move, or drive over a fallen power line—or anything in contact with it.

🛻 If you are inside a vehicle near a downed power line:
Stay inside the vehicle and call 911. Do not exit unless there is an immediate danger, such as a fire.

A downed line may not spark, move, or make noise, but it can still be energized. When in doubt, stay back and call 911.

In conjunction with SLM's temporary change in drinking water disinfection, the City of Mascoutah will be conducting its annual distribution system flushing program. The schedule for hydrant flushing is as follows:

📍September 14th through the 18th: 1st Street to east limits of town: south of hog river

📍September 21st through the 25th: 1st Street to west limits of town: south of hog river

📍September 28th through October 2nd: north of hog river to city limits

🤔 Where is Hog River in Mascoutah?

Hog River is the large drainage ditch that runs east and west through Mascoutah. It is located north of Stone Mill Estates and continues west toward the Mascoutah City Cemetery.

If you’ve seen the large ditch running through this area of town—that’s Hog River!

The flushing program consists of flowing water out of selected fire hydrants in order to improve water delivery and increase chlorine residuals in the water. It also confirms the fire hydrants and valves are operating correctly.

Discoloration in the water will be temporary. While the water is safe to consume, residents may want to run the faucets until the discoloration disappears. In addition, residents may want to hold off on laundry while the discoloration is present.

The 2026 Oil & Chip Program is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Friday, September 11, 2026 for selected areas of Mascoutah.
The order of roads to be completed is at the discretion of the contractor.

Oil and chip work is a widely used essential operation for road maintenance. If certain roads are not maintained with this method the pavement becomes enormously unreasonably expensive to repair. We appreciate your patience as we maintain the infrastructure in our community.💜

City of Mascoutah’s water supplier, SLM Water Commission, will begin annual maintenance of their water system on September 7, 2026. This maintenance is required to comply with USEPA regulations and maintain satisfactory water quality.

Instead of combining chlorine in the water with ammonia, SLM Water Commission will be adding chlorine only. The change in disinfectants will continue for approximately 6 to 8 weeks. During this time, the City will also be conducting our annual distribution system-flushing program. A separate notice will be issued to customers when the process is reversed to utilize a predominant monochloramine disinfectant residual instead of free chlorine residual. Chlorine levels will continue to meet EPA’s safety standards.

How will this program affect me?
The safety of the water will not be affected by this temporary change. Many water plants use chlorine in the free, uncombined form on a regular basis. Chlorine levels will continue to meet EPA’s safety standards.

Why is it necessary to make a temporary change in the type of disinfectant?
Water leaving the treatment plant is usually disinfected with a combination of chlorine and ammonia. Combining chlorine with ammonia is beneficial because it prevents bacterial growth by keeping chlorine in the water longer. It also prevents disinfection by product formation and taste / odor problems. The use of the ammonia with chlorine, however, can result in a buildup of small amounts of certain chemicals. These chemicals can be removed or prevented from forming by using free chlorine rather than combined chlorine for a short time each year.

Will I notice changes in the taste or smell of the water?
During the temporary switch, you may notice a stronger chlorine taste and smell in your drinking water. The taste and odor are not a health risk.

What can I do if I notice a chlorine taste or smell?
• Flush cold-water tap for 2 minutes. Run it for 5 to 10 minutes when water is not used for several hours.
• Refrigerate cold tap water in an open pitcher. Within a few hours, the chlorine taste and odor will disappear.

Who should take precautions during the temporary switch?
Dialysis patients and renal care facilities should be aware of these changes and adjust their health care practices accordingly. For questions, please contact your physician or kidney dialysis center. In addition, owners of residential fish aquariums should review their water treatment systems and make modifications if any are needed.

Can children and pregnant women drink the water?
Yes. They can use water for all purposes.
