We want to focus on all things good of Blount County. The Blount County Mayor's Office is located on the third floor on the breezeway of the Blount County Courthouse. Ed Mitchell serves as the Chief Fiscal Officer for the County, in addition to representing the County at many functions and presentations. Other duties include Budget Committee Chairman, making nominations and appointments of persons

to certain committees, and making recommendations to the Blount County Commission. The County Mayor's Office is in place to serve the citizens of Blount County. If you are in need of assistance, this office can put you in touch with the right people. It is the duty of this office to provide leadership to you in all issues regarding our County.

Happy Flag Day!

Earlier this week, I met many outstanding young people who have worked hard to gain tools and training to become tomorrow’s leaders, and it was my great honor to help them celebrate at their annual awards dinner for the Richard Williams Leadership Jr Leadership Development Academy.

The Richard Williams Jr. Leadership Development Academy was started in 2003 by George Williams to honor his late brother, Richard Williams, Jr. Richard Williams, Jr. was a community leader and former County Commissioner who strongly believed in our young people. Their brother, Clarence B. Williams, continued that legacy until his recent passing.

The Academy serves middle and high school students with a goal to teach and encourage leadership skills, academic excellence, social and interpersonal skills, cultural enrichment, and civic and community involvement. These young people are equipped with the skills to become confident young leaders and contribute to their communities.

The Williams Family members have devoted their lives to serving others and their legacy will leave a positive impact our community for generations and generations to come.

Mark your calendars for the 2026 Blount County Spring Rabies Clinic sponsored by the Blount County Health Department.

Vaccines are $15 per pet (cash only). Please bring all pets in a crate and/or on a leash. Pets must be over the age of three (3) months old to be vaccinated and the vaccine may only be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

There are two dates/locations available in June:

Join Keep Blount Beautiful at the Blount County Courthouse next Saturday, June 6 for a Reuse & Recycle Pop-Up! This event is a free, drive-through collection of various hard-to-dispose-of items for proper recycling or reuse. Please enter the parking lot via Court Cir. and exit via E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy.

Please review the information below carefully before packing up your items. Items cannot be dropped off any earlier than 9:00am and the event will end promptly at 12:00pm.

ACCEPTED ITEMS:

♻️Scott Recycling
Electronics (Please consider a $5-$10 donation for the use of electronic recycling services)

NOTE: There is a disposal fee for CRT TVs and CRT monitors. Cash or check payment only. Checks can be made out to Scott Recycling. CRT Monitors are $15 each, Small CRT TVs are $25, and Large CRT TVs are $35.

♻️Paper Bee Gone
Sensitive documents for shredding (Please consider a $5-$10 donation for shredding services)

NOTE: Documents will be accepted from households and small businesses/nonprofits only. Shredding is done on-site. Shredding services will only be available as capacity lasts. Staples, paper clips, and extra small binder clips do not have to be removed, but binding, three ring folders/binders, and medium/large binder clips cannot be shredded. To ensure room for sensitive documents only, regular paper should be taken to a recycling center or placed in your recycling bin.

If you are looking to recycle items not listed above, consider using the Blount County Recycling Center! The Blount County Recycling Center accepts glass, corrugated cardboard, mixed paper/newspaper, plastics #1 through #7, and more.

The Recycling Center also accepts some household hazardous waste items.

Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor the sacrifices made by our service men and women who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

If you have never visited the War Memorial in front of the Courthouse, I encourage you to do so. Inscribed on walls are the names of every Blount Countian who died in service to their country, from the War of 1812 to the War on Terrorism. These men and women were our ancestors, friends, and neighbors.

All gave some, but some gave all.

Mark your calendars and make plans to attend! 🇺🇸

The United Veterans of Blount County’s Memorial Day Program is set for Saturday, May 23, 2026, beginning at 10am at RIO Revolution (3419 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway). Light refreshments start at 9am.

The featured speaker is Chris Edmonds, son of World War II Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Roderick W. Edmonds (U.S. Army) and founder of Roddie’s Code.

Chris Edmonds visited my office recently, and it was my great honor to be in the presence of the Medal of Honor. It’s a rare occasion to see in person the box that holds the highest military decoration of the United States Armed Forces. This medal is awarded to those who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor.

As we are soon to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, this Medal of Honor is a reminder of what it cost to get here. Freedom has stood for 250 years because of men like Master Sergeant Roderick W. Edmonds, recipient of one of the approximately 3,552 Medals of Honor awarded to date. I highly encourage everyone to learn of Master Sergeant Edmonds’ story. While he considered himself “ordinary”, as an American POW in Germany, he refused to identify other Jewish-American POWs, saving approximately 200 soldiers. The highest-ranking non-commissioned officer held at Stalag IXA, he bravely resisted and defied his captors during his time as a POW. His example serves to show how “ordinary” citizens can be extraordinary.

I hope to see a full house on May 23rd for this amazing Memorial Day Program to honor our veterans! ❤🤍💙

Eagleton Ballpark has been extremely busy since its completion, but we’ve officially cut the ribbon and celebrated with a grand opening!

This grand opening was a celebration of more than a facility — it was a celebration of community pride, shared history, and the families who have kept baseball and softball woven into the fabric of Eagleton for generations. Eagleton Ballparks reflects where we have been, while creating new opportunities for where we are going -- represented by a multi-generational first pitch for both baseball and softball!

What a full circle moment for the ballpark to have original players like Doyle Daugherty, Michael Myers, Shug Hudson, Sam Franklin, Scott Davis, Kent Davis, Kenny Talbott, Tammi Ford and so many others who’ve played on these fields over the years to come share and celebrate the new fields. It was an emotional evening and I’m honored to have shared it with them.

One of my favorite days of the year is Job Signing Day for our high school graduates. It’s a day we celebrate the hard work of students heading right into the workforce or the military, starting the next chapter of their lives.

Students from all three school systems in Blount County were in attendance along with other highs schools in our region. It is especially important since it means keeping talent right here in Blount County. They make our workforce stronger, support local businesses and secure the future of Blount County.

This celebration event is a great example of what happens when schools, businesses and community partners work together. Thank you to our area high schools and their CTE leadership for believing in our students and helping lay the groundwork for their future. Thank you to Blount Partnership for making this event possible.

Thank you to the employers who are committed to investing in these students. They are not just filling jobs but are the future of our companies and our community.

These students have worked hard, worked internships, earned certifications and many have already gain real world experience even before graduating. Nobody just stumbles into a day like today, they have earned it.
