Every year on June 14, our team at Loaves & Fishes takes a moment to honor Flag Day and reflect on the powerful history behind the Stars and Stripes. As a Missouri nonprofit rooted in community support and hunger relief, we’re grateful for the symbols that bring us together and remind us of the values we share.
Here are a few Flag Day facts we love sharing with our St. Louis community:
• The current 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old student in 1958 and later selected by President Eisenhower.
• There have been 27 official versions of the U.S. flag, most updated as new states joined the Union.
• The colors carry meaningful symbolism: red for valor, white for purity, and blue for perseverance and justice.
• Six U.S. flags have been placed on the moon by Apollo mission crews.
• Our current design is the longest-running version in history, unchanged since 1959.
As we celebrate Flag Day, we’re grateful for a community that continues to show unity, compassion, and support for families facing food insecurity. If you feel inspired to make a difference today, we’d love for you to get involved.
