WPHD works with the people of Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties and with the city of Martinsville to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, prepare for and respond to situations and events that could become or have become significant public health concerns. Our local health departments provide the following services: immunizations, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, communicable disease control, family planning, health education, vital statistics, nursing home screenings, tuberculosis, breast and cervical cancer early screening & detection, WIC, baby care, pregnancy testing, child safety seat program, newborn screening, children’s specialty services, rabies control, sewage and well inspections and permits, drinking water information, restaurant permits and inspections, and emergency and disaster planning.

📣Virginia Food Regulation updates take effect September 10, 2026! 📣

Food establishments across Virginia should be aware of several important updates to food safety requirements, including:
🥜Sesame is now the 9th major food allergen
📝Food Establishments must disclose the presence of allergens in food
🍽️New provisions related to preparing foods with manufacturer’s cooking instructions
🌡️Updated requirements for monitoring TCS food temperatures during thawing
🚰Hot water minimum temperature is now 85°F
🚭Tobacco-use provisions now include vapes, pouches, and other ni****ne products
🦪Updated requirements for documenting the source of molluscan shellfish
📒The Person in Charge (PIC) also has updated responsibilities related to allergen awareness and employee training.
