In junior research class, Piedmont Governor’s School students heard from Jessica Smith, horticulturist for Danville City and Sonya Wolen with the Dan River Basin Association. During their talk, junior research students learned about the importance of pollinators in and around Virginia and got to pass around some local pollinating plants. In November, the junior research class will be involved in sponsoring, designing, and planting a Community Pollinator Garden at the Danville Visitor’s Center using some the plants they explored in class.

Physics students used coffee filters to investigate terminal velocity and air resistance. By collecting and analyzing motion data, students explored how changing mass affects the motion of a falling object and discovered how drag and gravity work together to produce terminal velocity.

In recognition of Patriot Day, students came together to Remember • Reflect • Honor the events and lasting impact of September 11, 2001. Working in mentor/mentee groups, students explored people, events, responses, and lasting changes connected to 9/11 and created displays highlighting what happened and why it matters. The activity concluded with a gallery walk, giving students the opportunity to learn from one another while reflecting on stories of courage, service, sacrifice, unity, and remembrance.

Our September Flex Activity, Peer Power Chats, brought juniors and seniors together to build connections and strengthen our Governor’s School community. Juniors spent time getting to know their assigned senior mentors before connecting with other seniors to hear different perspectives and receive advice about navigating Governor’s School. The activity encouraged meaningful conversations, peer support, and stronger connections across grade levels.

Chemistry students were up and moving as they tackled a Dimensional Analysis Question Trail. Students worked through a series of conversion problems, using each answer to lead them to the next question. It was a great way to practice dimensional analysis while adding a little movement, problem-solving, and friendly competition to chemistry!

Educators from the Dan River Basin Association visited Junior Research students to explore Virginia’s watersheds. Students investigated how litter and pollutants travel through waterways, and they used a dichotomous key to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates that may be affected by pollution in our local streams.

This hands-on experience will help prepare students for their next research project: The Litter Logperch! We are thankful for DRBA’s collaboration in this experiential learning and stewardship opportunity.

Senior statistics students completed an anchor activity to collaborate and review concepts about hypothesis testing for means and proportions. Students engaged in a kinesthetic review activity focused on selecting appropriate hypothesis tests to decide which would be appropriate for the scenario described. Students would walk to designated courtyard zones corresponding to hypothesis-testing methodologies. When disagreements arose, designated group representatives defended their choice. After the four corners activity, students worked in small collaborative groups to synthesize their understanding by drafting scenarios for peer evaluation.
