There is no single story, no single face, of homelessness.

In West Virginia, people experiencing homelessness come from all walks of life:

• 54% are living with a disability
• 24% are families with children
• 15% are veterans
• 11% are over the age of 60
• 10% are young adults

Many have deep roots in their communities. Some are working. Some are navigating health challenges. Some are raising children.

What these numbers show is simple:

Homelessness is not limited to one group of people; it doesn’t look the way many assume it does. There is no single path into homelessness, and no single type of person it affects.

The FY27 WVCEH DoHS Shelter Funding Competition is officially open.

We are seeking proposals from qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to provide lower-barrier, housing-focused shelter services for individuals experiencing homelessness across West Virginia.

📍 Priority will be given to ensuring at least one shelter in each of the state’s 11 regions.
🆕 New applicants from Regions 3, 4, and 8 are encouraged to apply.
📄 A Letter of Intent (LOI) is required for ALL applicants.

Most people don’t expect to experience homelessness.

In West Virginia, 75% of individuals experiencing homelessness are doing so for the first time.

For many, homelessness isn’t the result of long-term patterns, rather, it’s the result of a sudden change:
• A job loss
• A medical emergency
• A rent increase
• A family crisis

Housing instability can happen quickly, especially when there’s little financial cushion to absorb unexpected changes.

Understanding that matters, as it challenges the idea that homelessness is something that only happens to “other people.”
