Northeast US Weather Outlook: Rest of August + September 2026 🌦️

Updated detailed forecast for the Northeast ( , , , , , , , , , , , ) from Aug 12 through September 2026.

Blends short-range guidance (as of Aug 11), CPC medium-range outlooks, and long-range Almanac trends.

Near-Term (Aug 12–20)

• Aug 12–14: Mild to warm, highs mostly lower-to-mid 80s°F (cooler inland/north).

Rest of August (Aug 21–31) – Farmers’ Almanac Guidance

• Aug 20–23: Elevated hurricane/tropical threat along the Atlantic Coast—potential rain and wind if a system tracks near or offshore.

• Aug 24–27: Warm and mostly dry.

• Aug 28–31: Wet conditions return with more widespread showers.

Late-August pattern changeable: fair, warm periods interrupted by tropical moisture or frontal systems.

September 2026 Overview

September transitions.

Old Farmer’s Almanac favors cooler-than-average temperatures across much of the Northeast with wetter-than-normal conditions farther north.

Atlantic Corridor leans slightly cooler and drier. lingering summer-like warmth early (especially Mid-Atlantic), with stronger cool Canadian air later. Strong El Niño expected to influence the pattern.

Farmers’ Almanac September periods:

• Sept 1–3: Warm and unsettled (especially New England).

• Sept 4–7: Cooler; rain possible around Labor Day.

• Sept 8–11: Pleasant and sunnier from Maine southward.

Later: more frequent cool nights and potential tropical systems affecting the Mid-Atlantic or southern New England coastline.

Regional Notes

• Northern New England (ME, NH, VT): Coolest overall. Stronger shower chances and earliest fall feel.

• Southern New England / NY: Mix of warm days and unsettled periods; urban areas milder.

• Mid-Atlantic (NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC): Greater residual heat and humidity early; higher tropical moisture risk later in August and September.

• Coastal areas: Marine influence moderates temperatures; watch for gusty winds and heavier rain if tropical systems approach.

Severe Weather Alert – Widespread Wind Damage Expected Today
The forecast is holding steady. Here’s the latest breakdown:

Level 4 Risk ( , , , , and areas through )

This is the highest-risk zone today.

The greatest concentration of storms is expected here, with damaging straight-line winds as the primary threat.

Gusts of 60–70 mph will be common, with isolated reports potentially reaching 80 mph.

While confidence isn’t high enough yet for a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) upgrade, some tornado potential exists — especially with any supercells that can maintain structure long enough.

Level 3 Risk

Very similar conditions to the Level 4 area, just with slightly lower storm coverage and intensity.

The difference between a Level 3 and Level 4 is usually marginal — both carry a significant risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Level 2 Risk

Storm coverage becomes more scattered or may not materialize at all in some spots. Any severe weather that does occur will likely be more isolated.

Damaging winds and a low-end tornado threat remain possible, but the overall risk and number of severe reports should be lower than in the higher-risk zones.

Level 1 Risk

This is mainly a “just in case” outlook for areas on the fringe. A rogue storm could still sneak in and produce a damaging wind gust or small hail. It’s a low-probability setup, but meteorologists include it to cover all bases.

Bottom line:
Damaging winds are the main story across the risk area today, with the greatest threat focused from the Ohio Valley eastward into the Mid-Atlantic. Stay weather-aware, especially if you’re in or near the Level 4 or 3 zones.

Have a plan ready and monitor updates throughout the day.

❄️ Quick Update from Northeast Weather Alert

During the summer months, Northeast Weather Alert runs on a limited schedule as we prepare for the upcoming winter season.

As we head into early fall, NEWA will resume full operations and ramp up coverage for fall, winter, and early spring across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Current Long-Range Signal

I’m seeing a legitimate cold and potentially stormy signal for the eastern United States.

The models show a strong positive height anomaly and blocking high across northern Canada, Greenland, and surrounding areas, paired with below-normal heights and a broad trough across much of the central and eastern U.S.
In plain terms: high-latitude blocking is displacing cold air southward into the contiguous United States.

This large-scale setup often supports colder periods and increased opportunities for East Coast storms.

For the Mid-Atlantic

This pattern is particularly interesting.

A broad trough extending through the eastern half of the country could allow access to cold air while southern-stream systems ride underneath the block.

If individual storms track favorably, this raises the potential for late-season snow from Virginia and Maryland through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

For the Northeast and New England

The setup suggests a potentially active late-winter or early-spring pattern.

Blocking over northern Canada could slow systems down, reduce quick “cutter” tracks into the Great Lakes, and favor coastal redevelopment, Miller B-type storms, or slower-moving systems.

Exact storm tracks remain uncertain this far out from a monthly mean map.

Broader Context

NOAA currently indicates El Niño conditions are present and expected to strengthen into the 2026–27 winter, with their June outlook assigning a 63% chance of a very strong El Niño during the November–January period.

However, even a strong El Niño does not dictate a uniform regional outcome, and CFSv2 guidance remains just that — guidance.
My Early Take

I wouldn’t call for a uniformly cold winter based on this alone.

A stronger El Niño often produces a different early-winter pattern than what’s shown here.

What stands out is the potential for a back-loaded winter, with better cold and snow opportunities across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast developing later in the season if the blocking evolves as suggested.

This is an early signal worth monitoring for the 2026–27 winter.

While it’s far too soon to discuss specific storms or snowfall amounts, long-range guidance is beginning to hint at interesting possibilities for the second half of the season.

The National Weather Service's latest official snowfall forecast indicates a pronounced gradient across the region.

Areas proximate to Washington, including Bethesda and Silver Spring, are anticipated to receive approximately 8 inches of snow, while locations farther north and west, including Damascus and areas nearer to Frederick, are forecasted to receive around 13 inches.

The higher-end snowfall scenario suggests a 10 percent probability of 10 to 16 inches across much of the area, while the lower-end scenario posits 4 to 6 inches regionwide.

Snow is expected to spread across the region late Saturday night, becoming heavy at times overnight with snowfall rates potentially reaching 2 to 3 inches per hour.

All areas are expected to start as snow for the first several hours before mixing becomes a factor early Sunday morning.

Forecasters anticipate that sleet will mix in initially across Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, then spread northward toward the DC metro area later in the morning.

Freezing rain is forecasted to develop later Sunday, particularly south of Highway 50, and may reach major corridors including I-66, Route 7, and I-95 by Sunday afternoon.

Ice accumulation poses a significant concern, with forecasts indicating approximately 0.16 inches of ice closer to DC and roughly 0.04 inches farther north.

In a worst-case scenario, the high-end ice forecast suggests nearly a quarter inch of ice near the District and about a tenth of an inch in northern Montgomery County.

While the low-end scenario suggests minimal ice, forecasters emphasize that even modest icing could lead to tree damage and power outages, particularly when combined with heavy snow.

A snow system will spread across West Virginia from west to east between 5 PM and 11 PM EST on Saturday.

The snow intensity will increase overnight, with snowfall rates reaching 2-3 inches per hour, especially across the northern third of the state and mountainous regions.

By Sunday morning, warm air aloft will cause the snow to transition to sleet and freezing rain in southern and central areas, including Huntington, Charleston, Beckley, and Bluefield, while heavy snow persists in the north, including Morgantown and Pittsburgh, and eastern areas such as Martinsburg.

Travel conditions statewide will deteriorate to hazardous or impossible levels on Saturday night.
