Congratulations to the Air National Guard Medic Rodeo team!
Two West Virginia Air National Guard members were part of the ANG team that placed first in the 2026 Medic Rodeo in May at Canon Air Force Base, New Mexico.
Pictured in the team photo are Maj. Shane Yarrignton, 167th Medical Group, third from left, and Master Sgt. Seth Pack, 130th Medical Group, fourth from left.
Though the six-person team had never worked together before, they were able to utilize skills from both their military and civilian training to edge out their competition, marking the first time an Air National Guard team has won the competition.
Throughout the event they were tested with realistic, high-stress combat scenarios to assess their Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and Prolonged Casualty Care (PCC) capabilities. The team conducted crush injury care, chest tube placements, gas exposure care, burn care, traumatic brain injury care, K-9 resuscitation and more, in contested environment situations with limited supplies and equipment. Additionally, they were put through a grueling physical fitness challenge.
“In every scenario, every team member with their background was able to contribute their specific set of skills and overall knowledge and integrate in way that led to team victory,” said Yarrington, the team’s physician lead.
The Air National Guard’s Medic Rodeo team is a great example of how Guardsmen’s breadth of military and civilian experience contributes a unique blend of capabilities and strengths crucial for achieving mission success.

Members from the 167th Medical Group honed their skills yesterday during a Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) exercise. TCCC focuses on three main standards: care under fire, tactical field care and tactical evacuation. The exercise simulated a high-stress combat situation, utilizing live-role players and manikins, allowing our Airmen to practice the life-saving skills and tactics required in these types of environments.

On this day in 1946, the 167th Fighter Squadron was born from the legacy of the 369th Fighter Squadron. The end of World War II marked the evolution of the 369th as it was allotted to the Air National Guard and redesignated the 167th Fighter Squadron.
With just 54 airmen assigned, the unit trained on T-6’s at Clark Field on the Winfield Road in Putnam County, West Virginia, until the Kanawha Airport in Charleston was ready to base the 167th. After the Korean War, the unit relocated to Martinsburg to accommodate F-86 Sabre Jet aircraft which required a longer runway.
Throughout the years the 167th has undergone numerous changes in mission and aircraft, adapting to meet the evolving needs of our nation. Despite the transformations, the heart of the unit remains constant and is to meet the challenges ahead.

The 167th Airlift Wing’s Maj. Edwin Stanfield received the Airman’s Medal alongside West Virginia Army National Guardsman MAJ Ryan Reynolds who received the Soldier’s Medal at a ceremony at the Pentagon today. Stanfield and Reynolds were recognized for their extraordinary heroism outside of combat and reflect the courage, selflessness and commitment to others that define the West Virginia National Guard.

“The courage displayed by these two Guardsmen reflects the very best of the West Virginia National Guard,” said Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard. “Their actions remind us that service is not limited to a battlefield or a duty day. It is a commitment to step forward when others need help most.”

Their example represents the strength, character and readiness of our force, and we are proud to serve beside them.
