In honor of Unity Campaign, we are sharing another success story. The stories are shared with their permission, but their names are changed to protect their privacy.

Today's story is about Barbara. Barbara came into the Bethany House with her 4 children after unexpectedly losing her job and falling behind on her rent. Barbara like many of our clients had worked her whole life and had never been in a situation like this before and really didn't have any idea what to do. Barbara also faced an additional challenge because her 15-year-old daughter was 4 months pregnant and she had no idea how she was going to help her daughter when she couldn't even help herself. Barbara felt really hopeless and embarrassed about her situation like many of our clients do.

Our Director of Services worked extensively with Barbara and helped her get linked up with services that she had available to her and assisted her with her resume and applying for jobs. Within 2 months Barbara had gotten a new job in her field and began saving up money using our Customer Savings Plan. Our Director of Services also worked with Barbara's daughter and got her linked up with prenatal care and some other resources that she needed.

Within 3 months of being at our shelter, Barbara was able to save up enough money to move into a house of her own with all of her children before her new granddaughter arrived. Barbara unfortunately lost all of her furniture and household items because of the eviction and not having money to put things in storage. Our staff was able to take up donations and get them started not only with furniture and household items, but also with everything they would need to get them started with the new baby.

Barbara has been out of our shelter for almost a year now and recently stopped by to check in with us. Barbara was happy to report she is still in the same house and really likes her job. We were excited to see lots of pictures of how cute the grandbaby is, but we were more excited to hear that her daughter turned 16 and was able to get her GED and enroll in college. Barbara said that her daughter is a wonderful mother and is really determined to do well as a single mother.

If you would like to help other like Barbara and her family, you can donate through the link below or by texting Unity2040 to 71777.

One of the most common misconceptions about our agency is that we do not serve men because our shelter houses only women and children. This is actually not true. Not only are our shelter staff regularly assisting men with referrals, but we also serve men in our HOPWA Programs and Tenant Based Rental Assistance Programs.

Today's success story we are sharing in honor of The Unity Campaign is actually about a man who was referred to us by another program. This man had been battling stage 4 cancer. At this point the doctor's had done everything that they could do for him, and it was time for Hospice to step in and assist with comfort care in his final days. The issue was this man was homeless and needed a place to call home for his final days.

Due to the severity of the situation we got him scheduled for the same day to meet with the Director of one of our programs. The Director met with him and completed his paperwork. This man received SSDI but did not have enough funds to pay his first month's rent and security deposit to move in anywhere and struggled to find a place he could afford. The director called around to some landlords we work with and within 2 hours of him being at our office, we located him a place that was within walking distance of our office. This gentleman did not drive, so our director walked with him to go inspect the unit and sign the lease. Within 3 hours this man had a place to call home. We covered his 1st month's rent and security deposit and his SSDI was enough to cover the rent.

This man did not have any furniture or household items, so our Program Director used her own vehicle and made several trips from our office to bring this man an air mattress and household items that we had donated to get him started.

This man has passed away since then, but we are so grateful that we were able to let him die comfortably and with dignity in a home he could call his own. If this story inspired, you and you would like to help others like him you can donate at our link below or text Unity to 71777.

Did you know that The Bethany House is the only homeless shelter in the entire Eastern Panhandle of WV that houses children? In fact, about half of our shelter population is children at any given time. That is one of the many reasons our shelter is such a crucial resource to this area.

If you are able to donate through the Unity Campaign, please do so at the link below or text Unity to 71777. The campaign ends on March 15th.

In honor of being a part of the Unity Campaign we are sharing client stories. We have received permission from the clients to share their stories but have changed names to protect their privacy.

Today's story is Annie. Annie experienced homelessness after she lost her job and fell behind on rent. Initially, she stayed in her car before coming to the Bethany House. During her stay at the Bethany House, Annie was able to find a job working at a local store. Annie worked hard and showed up every day and was quickly offered a full-time position at the store.

Annie liked working at the store, but knew she wanted to do more with her life and wanted to make more money, so with the support of her Case-Manager she enrolled in a nursing program at a local community college. Annie worked and went to school for a few months while at the Bethany House until she saved up enough money to move into her new apartment.

Annie still stops by the Bethany House to check in and let the staff members know that she is doing well and thank them for their help. Last time we saw Annie she was happy to report that she had started her clinicals in the nursing program and should graduate in a year!

If Annie has inspired you and you want to help others like her, you can donate at the link below!
