📚🚸 Back-to-School Safety Tips from the Martinsburg Police Department 🚸📚

As a new school year begins, it’s the perfect time to refresh important safety habits for students, parents, and drivers. A safe community starts with awareness and cooperation!

🚦 Traffic & Pedestrian Safety

* Slow down in school zones – speed limits are strictly enforced.

* Watch for crossing guards and school buses. Always stop when buses display flashing red lights.

* Never text while driving, especially near schools or pickup/drop-off areas.

* Stay alert – children can be unpredictable around crosswalks and streets.

🚌 School Bus Safety

* Teach kids to stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus.

* Use handrails when getting on and off the bus.

* Stay at least 5 giant steps ahead of the bus and never cross closer than 6 feet to avoid blind spots.

🎒 Personal Safety for Students

* Walk with a buddy or group whenever possible.

* Keep phones in your pocket to avoid distractions when walking or biking.

* Use sidewalks and crosswalks—avoid shortcuts through alleys or yards.

* Memorize a parent/guardian’s phone number in case of emergency.

💻 Online Safety for Students

* Never share personal information like home addresses or school names.

* Talk regularly about responsible posting and online behavior.

* Report bullying—whether online or in person.

🏠 Safety at Home After School

* Set clear rules for when kids are home alone.

* Lock doors and windows immediately after getting home.

* Remind kids never to tell strangers they’re alone—online or on the phone.

👮 Stay Connected with Local Law Enforcement

* Sign up for community alerts.

* Attend school safety forums or PTA meetings where officers may present.

* Remind kids that officers are helpers—we’re here to keep everyone safe!
