Today we pause to remember the victims of September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders, survivors, and families who still carry that day with them.

Across the Eastern Panhandle, September 11, 2001 was also a Day of Caring. While the nation grappled with unimaginable loss, many of our neighbors spent that morning showing up for one another, a quiet reminder that even in our darkest moments, community carries us through.

This year, Day of Caring returns on September 15. We will have hundreds of volunteers joining us in that same spirit: showing up for each other, just as this community did 25 years ago. We will remember a morning that changed the world as we knew it, and we will honor the memories, legacies and sacrifices made on that September morning and in the days, weeks, months and years since.

Board Member Spotlight: Eric Stenger ⭐️

Eric's connection to United Way goes way back, literally to his days in Boy Scouts, where he first heard United Way's name as a major partner. Years later, watching his mom serve on the United Way board showed him firsthand how funds raised locally turn into real support for organizations like the Scouts.

As an adult, Eric came full circle: he was part of two organizations that received United Way support, volunteered for two Days of Caring, and then joined the board without a second thought.

"I love our community and the United Way supports our community in ways no other organization does, which makes me a proud supporter and board member."

Thank you, Eric, for your dedication to the Eastern Panhandle!

Meet the Board: Michele Haden, Board Chair 👋🏼

Michele's United Way story started with a single Day of Caring nearly 8 years ago, and it turned into a lasting commitment to our community.

"I have been involved with United Way for nearly 8 years! I began participating in Day of Caring and then joined the Little Black Dress Committee. A few years later I was asked to join the board. I quickly learned how much this organization does for the community and felt a strong connection to their mission. I love the community connections that I have been able to cultivate since joining the organization!"

From volunteer to Chair of the Board of Directors, that's the power of getting involved. 💙

Thirty-two years ago, someone asked our community to dream big. And this community said: watch us!

Organizers went to local agencies with one question: if anything at all could be done, what would you ask for? The answers came back big: building furniture, power-washing buildings, spreading mulch, planting flowers, cleaning parks, lots of painting projects and so much more!

And every single year since, volunteers have shown up and gotten it done!

The 32nd Annual Day of Caring is Tuesday, September 15th and we cannot wait to see what we accomplish this time.

Been on a Day of Caring team before? Tell us about your project in the comments 💬
We want to hear about it! 🧡

Do you know ALICE?

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but less than what it costs to make ends meet in the community where they live.

ALICE may be the person who handed you your coffee this morning. The cashier at your supermarket. Your child's teacher. A police officer. More often than not, they're heading to a second job to cover child care or rent.

Our CEO Penny Porter shares who ALICE may be here in Berkeley, Morgan and Jefferson Counties.

With the WV ALICE Report, you can learn more about your own county. The number of your neighbors living below the ALICE threshold is almost certainly higher than you'd guess. 💬

We are planning a virtual opportunity to learn more about ALICE. We hope you’ll join us! Details coming soon!
