You can be raised to a job, love it your whole life, and still not be built to do it.
Elmer Kelton was born in Andrews County in 1926, on a ranch his father ran. That was the life laid out in front of him, and out there it was about the only life that counted for much. The trouble was his eyes. He could not see well enough to work cattle the way a hand has to see, and somewhere in his boyhood he understood he was never going to be the cowboy his father wanted.
So he went at it sideways. He took his degree at the University of Texas in 1948 and went to work with words instead. Farm and ranch editor of the San Angelo Standard-Times for fifteen years. Years more after that at Livestock Weekly. He spent his working days writing about cattle and grass and rain for the men who lived and died by all three, and he wrote his novels in whatever hours were left over. He did that for decades. A job and a calling, and he never turned loose of either one.
In 1973 he published The Time It Never Rained. It is not a pioneer story. It is about a stubborn rancher trying to outlast a drought that will not break, and it rings true to anybody who has ever stood in a yard and studied a sky that had nothing in it.
The Western Writers of America gave Elmer Kelton seven Spur Awards. In 1995 that same outfit voted him the greatest western writer of all time.
The boy who could not see well enough to make a hand spent his life showing the rest of us that country anyway.

Hello everyone, this is Gabi Desmuke(Pat's daughter of the heart as she calls me). The library will be open Monday to Friday 1-5pm. I know things have been a little crazy these last 2 weeks, but we sure appreciate everyone's patience as we navigate this journey. Pat is doing better and getting stronger every single day. So keep those thoughts and prayers going please. She is a very tough, stubborn... wait I meant determined lady and she will get herself back to the library as soon as she can. She told me to tell everyone she truly appreciates all the kind words and for thinking of her and that she is trying hard to get back as soon as she can. We hope to see you back at the library soon. :)
