Today, Mrs. Deese and 6th-grade students are beginning the second day of their daily double-dose literacy session by being word detectives by performing the following:
1. Looking closely at the word and circling or underlining the recognizable word parts (prefix, suffix, or root).
2. Identifying each part of the word and its meaning. For example, “geo” means “earth.”
3. Combining parts of the word to build the whole word.
After this, Mrs. Deese and students read a scientific text with Mrs. Deese reading first and then the class reading aloud with accuracy and expression. Students then found the main idea in each paragraph to help them understand what the author is teaching.
