Why are we planning to keep our Veterans and Memorial Day Ceremonies on the Town Green?
Answer: Space and Safety
We will always do what is best for our veterans, their families, and our residents.
We aren’t moving away from Veterans Memorial Park. We’re making room for more people to honor what it represents.
We have invited all the veterans’ organization commanders to meet with us and the Police Dept on Monday, so we could share why it’s important to keep the larger two ceremonies on the Town Green. Additionally, we are always willing to receive questions and concerns directly through messenger, email or phone.
The biggest issue is safety and space. The Police have concerns as do we. We can only close the highway for a short period of time. This creates an unsafe space not only for the drop off and pick up our elderly vets and spouses, but also the mass exiting at the end.
There is little to no parking at the park, no designated ADA parking, and we’ve simply outgrown the park for a large ceremony.
More veterans are walking and participating in the parade because of the shorter distance.
In the past, the majority of people who could be inside the park were mostly the parade participants because we had reserved spots. Many residents and families are left standing on the hill or along the curb of 3A trying to see, trying to listen and that isn’t safe or fair to them.
Marshfield’s participation and population has simply grown… which means more people in our community are coming out to honor our veterans. That is a wonderful thing!! On the Town Green, people who watch the parade can also walk over for the ceremony which is great to see! Additionally, those driving vehicles in the parade can park on Snow Rd and then attend the ceremony.
We are able to supply a large area of seating and Veterans can bring their children and grandchildren. We see families with strollers, picnic blankets and chairs, kids playing, and people gathering together. It’s actually been amazing to watch, and veterans have thanked us for giving them a place where they can bring their families and pass along the importance of these ceremonies and honoring those who served.
It’s is our duty to continue to honor our veterans while keeping our community safe.
Our park and its meaning will never be forgotten and will continue to be a part of honoring our veterans through smaller events and ceremonies and its brick program.
