We want to remind drivers that school is now back in session and drivers should use caution while driving near schools.

In addition to school busses picking up and dropping off kids; there are a lot of teenage drivers on the roads, as well as children walking to and from school in town.

While patrolling at an elementary school crosswalk this morning, a Deputy issued citations to two drivers using cell phones in violation of the hands-free driving law. Distracted driving is dangerous and even more so in a location where children are crossing the street to their elementary school. We ask drivers to make safe driving decisions.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to avoid East Main Street-Wallace Avenue and Wallace Avenue-Garwin Road intersections today. Ragbrai bicycles will be leaving Marshalltown and traveling to Independence today.

RAGBRAI will be entering Marshall County today.

The route will take riders into State Center using old Highway 30 then headed toward Marshalltown after taking old Highway 30 from State Center and then North on Knapp Avenue through Lamoille to Main Street Road where riders will turn East and take Main Street Road into Marshalltown. There will be thousands of bicycles on the route today with heavy bike traffic expected to begin around noon and remain into the early evening. Motorists and residents should avoid the route to avoid heavy traffic and long delays. Traffic control to cross the route will be provided at 3rd Ave SW/Old Highway 30 in State Center and Marsh Avenue (Hwy 330)/Main Street Road as well as 9th Street/Main and 3rd Street/Main in Marshalltown. Other intersections will not have dedicated traffic control, and motorists should expect long delays to cross the route.

Please be patient and safe while driving in the area today.

Deputy Mitchell Cole officially joined the Marshall County Sheriff's Office on July 1st and is currently working through our Field Training Program. Deputy Cole comes to us with previous law enforcement experience from the Tama Police Department, and we're excited to have him as part of our team.
