You may be seeing headlines about recent hantavirus cases in the news. Here’s what’s important for Marshall County residents:

🦠 Risk remains very low locally
• There are currently no known hantavirus cases in Marshall County or Iowa linked to these reports
• Hantavirus is rare and is most often connected to exposure to infected rodents — not person-to-person spread

📌 What is hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but serious illness spread through contact with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This can happen while cleaning barns, sheds, garages, campers, or other enclosed spaces where mice may be present.

🏡 How to protect yourself
✔️ Avoid contact with wild rodents and nests
✔️ Seal openings around homes and buildings
✔️ Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning rodent droppings
✔️ Spray areas with disinfectant before cleaning — don’t sweep or vacuum dry droppings

As spring projects and garage cleanouts continue across Marshall County, taking a few extra precautions can help keep you and your family safe.
