Finally, we want to thank our final award recipient from our 2026 Restoring Hope Gala, Detective Erin Hug!
The Sara Simmons Advocacy Award is given to someone that reflects the passion she has demonstrated in keeping victims safe and ending domestic violence. The murder of Saraβs daughter, Debra Frost, only strengthened her war against perpetrators of domestic violence. Soon after her daughterβs death, Sara began pursuit of legislation that served to empower victims of domestic violence by ensuring stronger legal protections and law enforcement action against assailants. That legislation, known as PA 53, was passed in 2003. On a national level, Sara permitted S.A.F.E. Place to use her and her familyβs tragedy by the production of our educational video, Battered Heartβs. The video has been used across the nation for training purposes. She has truly set a high standard for award recipients to aspire to.
This year, we are excited to present the Sara Simmons Advocacy Award to Detective Erin Hug of Marshall Police Department!
Detective Hug plays a key role in the successful implementation of the Lethality Assessment Protocol within our community. Her attention to detail, diligence, and consistent follow-through in this process have directly contributed to the timely identification of high-risk victims and their connection to critical, lifesaving services. Her sound judgment, experience, and ability to model effective practices exhibits her strong leadership capacity and understanding of collaborative community-based policing. Additionally, her part in conceptualizing and developing the Soft Interview Room has created a more supportive and trauma informed environment for victims during interviews and likely increases the effectiveness of investigations.
Detective Hugβs integrity, professionalism, and compassion for victims are greatly appreciated by survivors and our team. Please join us in congratulating Detective Hug! π
