What to know about today’s severe storm threat

A vigorous cold front will sweep through the D.C. area this afternoon and evening (Wednesday), setting off strong to severe thunderstorms and putting an end to the record-breaking heat.

The most probable timing for storms is between 3 and 9 p.m., from west to east. In the Beltway area, the highest chance for storms is between 4 and 7 p.m. Storms may be most numerous from the Beltway northward and somewhat more scattered to the south.

Storms could become intense as the front is coming through during peak late-day heating, when they can draw energy from the steamy air. In addition to lightning and downpours, some storms could unleash damaging wind gusts and large hail (up to an inch in diameter).

The National Weather Service has placed the area in a Level 2 out of 5 risk zone for severe storms and may issue a severe thunderstorm watch.

The storms will come through swiftly in most spots, passing in 30 to 60 minutes, bringing an average of 0.25 inches of rain. But the heaviest storm cells could drop an inch or even a little more.

Temperatures will drop quickly as the storms pass, from the 90s into the upper 60s and 70s.

We will post additional updates if severe weather threatens.
