Marshall Volunteer Fire Department

Marshall Volunteer Fire Department We proudly provide Fire, Rescue, and First Responder service to Marshall and surrounding areas.

The Marshall Community Volunteer Fire Department is located in the southern central part of Madison County, North Carolina. The MCVFD is broken up into three areas: The Town of Marshall, The Smokey Mountain Fire District which extends four miles in each direction from the fire station excluding the town limits and the Volunteers Response District which runs from the SMFD line and covers everything

else to the district boundary. The first organized fire department in the Marshall community was established in 1852 when the Town of Marshall was chartered and established as the county seat of the newly created Madison County. In 1979 the Smokey Mountain Fire District was established and chartered through the state of North Carolina and a tax was approved to improve the ability of fire protection to the citizens of the community. At one time the MCVFD provided services for much of Madison County until other communities began forming their own fire departments to improve fire protection for the citizens of their own communities. Today the MCVFD provides fire and rescue services to approximately 84 square miles including the communities of Rector Corner, Bear Creek, Meadows Town, Little pine, Walnut Creek, Ammons Branch, Silver Mill, Wind Swept, Long Branch, Ivy Hill as well as provides protection to the Town of Marshall.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chief Dorsey. He was a genuinely kind soul who had a way of brightening every room he entered. During this difficult time, we ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this loss.

Fire danger is high, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Fires can start almost immediately and easily from all causes. Fires can spread rapidly and intensify quickly. Spot fires can be a constant danger.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Spread prevention, not wildfire.

High Wildfire Danger expected over the next few days across the state, thanks to extended drought condtions for a good portion of the state, and the growing season has started. There will be an increased fire danger, low relative humidity and limited rainfall (a few storms tomorrow afternoon, possible east), and gusty winds will lead to an increased risk of fires.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry
grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Structure fire response 3/14/26

Marshall Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 5:30 PM this evening, along with the North Carolina Forest Service, for a reported possible wildfire in the area of Walnut Creek Rd/ Sprinkle Branch Rd. While units were en route, the call was upgraded to a structure fire. When units arrived on scene they found a two-story home, two vehicles, and a woods fire.

Thankfully, the homeowners were not at home when the fire occurred and are safe.

We would like to thank all of our neighboring departments, ems and utilities for their quick response and assistance on scene this evening.

DOT crews are working as hard as they can to improve road conditions. Please stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. Reducing traffic helps keep our responders and crews safe.

Please use caution if travel is necessary.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is prioritizing assets and resources on Interstates, primary routes, and then secondary roads.

Madison County Government leadership and the Emergency Management Team are collaborating regularly with DOT to maintain awareness of roads throughout the County. DOT is reporting they have enough salt to get through at least one more storm, maybe two, but they are being careful to focus on primary State roads to ensure adequate supplies. The DOT crews have been working nonstop over the past 36 hours. With two back-to-back storms, with one reaching as far as the Outer Banks, resource management is critical.

In the most recent update, County leadership expressed appreciation to the DOT leadership and crews.

Please visit the Drive NC Gov Website for the latest road updates at https://drivenc.gov/.
