Who is Down Home Madison?
Down Home Madison is, simply put, you.
Our story started on doors. We put in miles walking through the beautiful hills of this community, knocking on doors and engaging in deep conversations with people from Marshall to Mars Hill, from Allegany to Luck.
People across Madison County told us what the needed. Sometimes their stories were hard: A young mother working hours as a waitress with no healthcare and barely making ends meet. Sometimes they were visionary: An older farmer telling us how he built a community online of folks from far away places, learning about new cultures, new people, and new ways.
Down Home North Carolina has locally-based chapters across the state, all in rural places. Each chapter is member-led, meaning that the people involved in the chapter decide what issues matter the most to organize around. In some chapters it might be housing, in others, it might be the opioid crisis, in still others, it might be reforming the criminal justice system. What every chapter has in common, however, is that we know we must build multi-racial power for poor and working people if we want to see the change we need in the towns we love.
