Memorial Day, 2026. The day set aside to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our nation. In our combined histories dating back almost 100 years, two men have been killed in action in service of the United States, and the AAFD pauses to remember.

++John D. Hutchman, Word War II. US Navy Reserve Petty Officer First Class Hutchman was KIA on June 26, 1944 in the South Pacific. As a member of the former Mars VFC, he was posthumously granted Life Member status shortly after his death.

++ Harold Eugene Morrow, Vietnam War. Third Marine Division Gunnery Sergeant Morrow was KIA July 21, 1967 in South Vietnam. GYSGT Morrow was a member of the former Valencia VFC at the time of his death. Because of differing fire company practices, or perhaps oversight, it was only discovered in recent years he had not been honored posthumously as a Life Member. It was awarded several years ago by the AAFD.

ALWAYS REMEMBER!

Last Saturday, 18 Members (11 Instructors / 7 Students) participated in the annual 24 Hour ERS Hosted by our friends at Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company. Engine 42 was staged along with 6 other Engine Companies, 3 Truck Companies and 3 Rescue Companies at 21’s firehouse and responded to a collective 90+ “incidents” within the 24 hour period.

Members responded to and handled Building Fires, Vehicle Fires / Crashes, Technical Rescue and EMS incidents.

Special Shoutout to the staff as always for putting this event together.

Thanks to Cranberry for opening up their doors and hosting.

AAFD tradition of marking the gravesites of our past Life Members continues. In the lead-up to Memorial Day, crews made their rounds to 13 cemeteries in the Mars area to mark 225 graves with a bronze monument and a service flag. The tradition evolved from the former Mars VFC, and includes those from Valencia VFC. We’ve highlighted a few of those leaders from earlier generations.

“Butch” Leonberg: he is the man responsible for starting this tradition. Also served many years as Assistant Chief. His wife Alice was active in the Auxiliary.

Russ McCandless: served as a line officer. Also served as the Mars Borough Superintendent of Public Works for years.

Lester Kennedy: Charter member, served in various officer positions, including Fire Chief. Also served as Mayor of Mars Borough for multiple terms.

Charles Marburger: served in various officer positions, including multiple terms as the Company President. His wife Patti was active in the Auxiliary.

Dave C**n: served in several officer positions, including Company Warden. Also served for many years as Police Chief of Mars Borough.

Our thanks to each for their many, many years of dedicated service!
