As we join the nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, Northern Michigan University honors all who were impacted, including one of our own: Lt. Col. Kip Taylor, '85.

A former NMU ROTC cadet, basketball team captain, and Marquette native, Lt. Col. Taylor dedicated his life to service and family. Just hours before losing his life at the Pentagon, he wrote to friends that family was his greatest joy, reflecting: “What we do until that moment pales in comparison to what we do after that point in the day.” Today, his legacy of sacrifice and love lives on through his family and our Wildcat community.

We invite alumni, students, faculty, and local community members to join us on campus Friday, Sept. 11, to reflect, honor, and remember:

8:46 a.m. – Carillon Bell Toll & Moment of Silence
The campus carillon bells will ring to mark the moment the first plane struck Tower 1, followed by a moment of silence.

9:30 a.m. – Lt. Col. Kip Taylor Tribute & Flag Presentation
Gather with us at Veteran’s Rock (on the Northern Center lawn) as NMU ROTC presents the colors and a 9/11 memorial flag in Taylor’s honor, with remarks by Major Jeffrey Woleben.

Sept. 17–19 – “Find a TV” Theatre Production
As part of Homecoming week, join us for an original production capturing how campus and the U.P. experienced 9/11. Free and open to the public in Jamrich Hall 1100 (7:30 p.m. nightly; reserve tickets online).

Sarah Juday '14 BS, '20 MAE teaches junior kindergarten at Superior Hills Elementary in Marquette. She was just named Michigan's Region 1 Teacher of the Year, one of 10 selected statewide.

Dr. Joe Lubig '91 BS, '00 MAE retired this year as associate dean and director of NMU's School of Education, Leadership and Public Service. He was inducted into Central Michigan University's Higher Education Hall of Fame this summer, and came to NMU in 2002 after 13 years teaching in Marquette Area Public Schools.
