This November is the centennial of the Barnes-Hecker mine disaster in Ishpeming. With 51 fatalities, it was the worst ferrous mining disaster in American history. In anticipation of the centennial, the Marquette Regional History Center and the Barnes-Hecker Centennial Committee recently collaborated on some community digitization events for materials related to the Barnes-Hecker disaster, including this image of some of the widows and children of the victims. The committee will announce the fall events for the commemoration soon, but you can already explore the community collection on UPLINK: https://uplink.nmu.edu/node/160837

UPLINK is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of the Upper Peninsula. Meet Glenn Bjork, a miner whose remarkable story was captured during a 1992 interview for the book “The Last Generation Underground.” Glenn, along with other miners, shares firsthand accounts of life working for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company on the rugged Marquette Iron Range in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. These stories provide a vivid glimpse into the grit, camaraderie, and challenges faced by those who worked deep underground, preserving a chapter of history that remains both fascinating and vital.
