Yesterday afternoon, our team was diverted from a routine patrol to respond to a reported vessel taking on water North of Grand Marais, with four people onboard. Our 45' Response Boat - Medium, along with the National Park Services Arrowhead arrived on scene after being vectored to the vessel by a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Traverse City. Both boats worked together transferring the personnel off the vessel in distress and safety towing it back into port saving four lives and preventing the loss of their vessel. Bravo Zulu to all those involved!

Miss us? Well, we've been busy!

From ice rescue to ice breaking and getting back on the water. Our team has been hard at work conducting training, getting our boats ready, and supporting local partners.

Most Notably:

We welcomed aboard a new member of our team, SN Sydney Robison whom recently graduated from basic training in Cape May, NJ!

We had one of our ice rescue teams on standby throughout Michigan Ice Fest 2025 in Munising, as climbers from across the world took to the frozen landscape of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The crews dedication towards that certifications has been above and beyond as their efforts have resulted in a new boat crewmember on the 29" Response Boat - Small II, 5 communication watchstanders, 5 SKF-ICE Operators, and 7 boarding team members! Bravo Zulu!

Finally, we were on scene as the USCGC Morro Bay (WTGB-106) conducted ice breaking operations in Munising's South Bay, ensuring the safe navigation of commercial traffic into the harbor.

Happy 406 Day!

Wondering what we mean by that? The 406 signal frequency is designated internationally for use only for distress, and today (April 6th) is a great day to learn about how useful and potentially lifesaving 406 EPIRBS can be. We recommend that boaters purchase a 406 EPIRB (Electronic Position Indicating Radiobeacon). These devices use the 406 frequency to quickly send your location to rescuers if you get into trouble on the water. EPIRBs can be purchased at marine supply stores or online and they come in a variety of types.

⚠️ Warmer temperatures and higher winds will continue to cause ice degradation throughout the region! If you choose to go onto the ice please pay attention to the weather forecast and local ice conditions.

‼️ We have received multiple reports of people and snowmobiles going through the ice in Munising near Sand Point in the last 10 days. Thankfully everyone has been able to self rescue however we urge everyone to exercise the utmost caution if you decide to traverse the ice!

Warmer temperatures and a forecasted small craft advisory can cause degrading ice conditions in the coming days throughout the area.

Remember that no ice is safe ice!

We have been getting many questions about walking from Sand Point to Grand Island. We NEVER recommend walking across the ice to Grand Island.

There is a deep, swift channel that runs between Sand Point and Grand Island. This makes ice thickness unpredictable, unsafe, and easy to fall through. Water temperatures under the ice will quickly cause hypothermia, which can lead to death. Attempting to walk across the ice is very dangerous.

There is no ice forecast. There is nobody who checks ice thickness.

If you want to see the Grand Island ice formations, bring a zoom lens or binoculars with you and view them from Sand Point.

Better yet, stay on the mainland and view beautiful ice formations off of Sand Point Road. To reach these, park at Sand Point Beach and walk back towards the Munising Falls Visitor Center. There are small, brown signs that communicate where the formations are. The approaches to these formations are often steep and can be icy, we recommend using traction devices (spikes, crampons, etc.) for the best experience.
