Please see the below message from our friends at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Remember that no ice is safe ice!
We have been getting many questions about walking from Sand Point to Grand Island. We NEVER recommend walking across the ice to Grand Island.
There is a deep, swift channel that runs between Sand Point and Grand Island. This makes ice thickness unpredictable, unsafe, and easy to fall through. Water temperatures under the ice will quickly cause hypothermia, which can lead to death. Attempting to walk across the ice is very dangerous.
There is no ice forecast. There is nobody who checks ice thickness.
If you want to see the Grand Island ice formations, bring a zoom lens or binoculars with you and view them from Sand Point.
Better yet, stay on the mainland and view beautiful ice formations off of Sand Point Road. To reach these, park at Sand Point Beach and walk back towards the Munising Falls Visitor Center. There are small, brown signs that communicate where the formations are. The approaches to these formations are often steep and can be icy, we recommend using traction devices (spikes, crampons, etc.) for the best experience.
