Meet Tanya Meyers, the Wildfire County Coordinator for Yolo County 👋👋

Since 2021, , powered by a partnership between and CAL FIRE, have been increasing community wildfire resilience by planning and advancing prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and recovery projects.

For Tanya, access to CAL FIRE outreach materials and ongoing collaboration has been foundational to building wildfire preparedness in her community.

From distributing Ready for Wildfire materials at local events to sharing defensible space and home hardening resources, these tools have helped make wildfire safety information more accessible and actionable for residents 🔥🔥

That partnership has also extended into long-term planning. Through the Wildfire County Coordinator program, Tanya worked closely with CAL FIRE to help develop Yolo County’s first Community Wildfire Protection Plan—bringing together a local steering committee and maintaining strong, ongoing communication with CAL FIRE staff.

🔥 Prescribed Burn Notice — Mariposa County

CAL FIRE will be conducting the Exchequer Bike Path Prescribed Burn at McClure Point, between Merced Falls Road and Boat Club Drive.

📅 June 10–12, 2026
🕖 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily
🌲 120 acres of managed burn area

This project reduces fuel loading to protect campgrounds and residences along Boat Club Drive — helping prevent larger, more destructive wildfires.

🚗 Heads up for drivers: Traffic may slow or stop briefly. Smoke and fire activity on cut banks with narrow shoulders may affect road conditions. Watch for crews and use caution.

✅ If you are in the project area — please do NOT report the fire. This is a controlled burn.

Today, we pause to honor the CAL FIRE personnel who gave their lives in service to
California in the month of June.

Their dedication came at the highest cost. We honor their sacrifice, remember their stories, and recognize the enduring impact they have left on our department and the communities they served.

CAL FIRE Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) leadership recently came together for our Unit Leadership Training (ULT). A special thank you to for providing the space and partnership that made this gathering possible, a dedicated environment where our chief officers aligned on the changes and improvements that strengthen our operational capabilities and cooperation among our local partners.

Chief officers received a weather outlook briefing for the upcoming fire season, sharpened leadership skills, and engaged in team building exercises that reinforce the trust our crews depend on. From our Unit Chief to our Operations Chief, our executive staff delivered a comprehensive Unit update covering the state's strategic direction, budget, personnel movement, equipment updates, and program briefings. We also received critical training on improved communication processes with , updates that strengthen our cooperation and coordination when responding to devastating natural disasters.

The work doesn't stop. Our leadership is always training, always learning, and always preparing for what's next.

🔥🔥 Different ways we fight wildland fires.

When combating wildfire, CAL FIRE employs a range of operational strategies that generally fall into three categories:

âž¡ Direct attack: Firefighters working along the fires edge, using hoses, hand tools, and engines to stop the fire from spreading.
âž¡ Indirect attack: Firefighters working far ahead of the fire front, using dozer lines and hand lines to build wide and strategic contingency and control lines, organizing firing operations to build buffer in areas that we can control while also steering the fire safely away from homes and communities.
➡ Air support: Helicopters conduct water drops while fixed wing aircraft apply fire retardant to slow the fire’s spread, allowing firefighters on the ground to suppress the fire.

Every fire is different, so we use the most effective mix of strategies to protect lives, property, and natural resources.

🌳🌳 We need YOUR help.

The Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB) is an invasive pest quietly damaging oak trees across Southern California. It spreads quietly, and by the time trees show signs of damage, it’s often too late.

The GSOB Blitz is a community effort where people like you help spot and report signs of the beetle while you’re out in nature. Your observations can help experts track the spread and protect healthy forests.

If you hike, camp, or spend time outdoors in Southern California, you can be a part of the solution and help save California’s oaks.
