🔥 BURN SUSPENSION IN EFFECT – Madera, Mariposa & Merced Counties 🔥

Effective June 1, 2026, CAL FIRE Madera, Mariposa, Merced Unit has SUSPENDED all open burning permits and open fire use across ALL State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands within Madera, Mariposa, and Merced Counties.

Rising temperatures, low fuel moisture, and little to no rain in the forecast have created an extreme wildfire threat to life, property, and natural resources.

⚠️ What's prohibited:
• Open burning by permit
• All other uses of open fire in SRA lands (outside incorporated cities)

✅ What's still allowed:
• Campfires in organized campgrounds OR on private property — only if maintained to prevent spread to wildland or neighboring property
• Restricted temporary burning permits may be issued for public health, safety, or welfare needs (per PRC §4423.2)

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) announces that effective 8:00 a.m., May 1, 2026, all hazard reduction burning in Eastern Madera County, Mariposa County, and the SRA of Merced County will require a valid burn permit.

Residents must verify it is a permissive burn day and follow all permit conditions.

A strong uptick in precipitation and lowering snow levels late Saturday into Sunday morning will bring widespread Moderate to Major winter storm impacts to the Sierra Nevada, mainly above 7,000 feet. A Winter Storm Warning will go into effect for this area starting 5 PM this afternoon and remain in effect until 11 PM Sunday evening.

Always prepare long before the threat of a wildland fire so your home is ready in case of a fire: Create defensible space by clearing brush away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping and harden your home with fire-safe construction measures. Put together a basic emergency supply kit. Check emergency equipment, such as flashlights and generators.
Plan escape routes and make sure all those residing within the home know the plan of action. Plan ahead.
