Today is "National Donut Day"! In 1917, during WWI, 250 women called, "Donut Lassie's" with The Salvation Army, made donuts on the front lines of France to feed American Soldiers.

Today we remember their commitment to taking care of American soldiers!

We will be at the Marion VA tomorrow celebrating, "National Donut Day" with our local veterans. Thank you to SI Roofing and Siding for sponsoring the purchase of 250 Krispy Kreme Donuts to give out tomorrow! Thank you to Tom Harness and the Williamson County Veterans Assistance Commission for helping organize this special event.

During WWI in 1917, 250 Salvation Army Lassie's, traveled from America to the front lines of France to feed American soldiers. They came up with a doughy recipe that could be fried in a soldier's hat and that began the making of we know as the donut. The Lassie's were then named the "Donut Lassie's".

The Salvation Army is known all over the world for their support for veterans. Tomorrow we will honor this tradition by handing out over 250 donuts to those who have served our country.

Did you know National Donut Day began because of American Soldiers?

In 1917, during World War I, brave Salvation Army volunteers known as the "Donut Lassies" traveled to the front lines in France. Their mission was simple: provide donuts, coffee, encouragement, and a reminder of home to American troops serving far from their families.

More than 100 years later, we are continuing that tradition.

On Friday, June 5, The Southern Illinois Salvation Army and the Williamson County Veterans Assistance Commission invite Veterans, VA patients, visitors, and their families to stop by the Marion VA Health Care System for a free donut and a heartfelt thank you for your service.
