At 0804 hrs. today Mill Township was dispatched to the Marion VA Medical Campus for a working commercial structure fire. Prior to our arrival, Marion Fire's first incoming units were met with heavy smoke and flames visible, where structural collapse eventually became an issue. As the incident progressed into the day, the fire spread to an adjacent structure, causing units to spend the majority of the day on scene. Quick numbers show our engine flowed approximately 176,000 gallons of water and our tanker shuttled over 38,000 gallons of water. When you consider the amount of equipment on scene today, the numbers become staggering.

Responding agencies;
Marion Fire
Center Township
Mill Township
Washington Township
Swayzee
Gas City
Grant County EMS
Grant County EMA
American Red Cross

Many thanks goes to Marion Meijer and several community members for providing refreshments throughout the day, as well as Greg Buck who trucked in fresh water to the VA facilities.

⚠️ A fire was reported at approximately 6:30 a.m. on the Marion VA Medical Center campus in engineering buildings 51, 52, 53.

Local Marion Fire Departments responded to the fire and have it contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Local fire investigators are on the scene. There were no injuries or fatalities. There is no impact to patient health care.

Due to fire suppression efforts, there may be a temporary loss of water supply to the main campus. In anticipation of the loss, bottled water and handwashing stations have been deployed across all remaining Marion campus areas. Currently there is not a safety impact to patient healthcare. ⚠️

This evening we met with Girl Scout Troop 553 to discuss fire safety, exit plans in the home, and first aid. After going over the equipment on the trucks, everyone jumped in for a ride which seemed to be a big hit!

It's always a successful visit when we're able to educate (and help earn badges as well). If you're ever interested in a station tour, reach out to a member or stop by when you see someone there.
