Many common household items can be hazardous if they are not stored or disposed of properly.

Examples of household hazardous materials include:

• Aerosol cans, including hair spray and deodorant
• Nail polish and nail polish remover
• Cleaning products and furniture polishes
• Pesticides
• Automotive products, such as antifreeze and motor oil
• Batteries, mercury thermometers, and fluorescent light bulbs
• Flammable products, such as kerosene, home heating oil, propane tanks, and lighter fluid
• Workshop and painting supplies, including paint thinners and turpentine
• Lawn and garden products, such as herbicides and insecticides

These items should not be poured down drains, thrown in regular trash when prohibited, or stored near heat sources. Always read labels, store products safely, and follow local disposal guidelines.

When in doubt, check with your local solid waste district or emergency management office for proper disposal options.

𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠

Being in a vehicle during a tornado is dangerous. The safest option is to get to a sturdy building or storm shelter as soon as possible.

If you are already driving and a tornado is visible, far away, and traffic is light, you may be able to drive out of its path by moving at a right angle away from the tornado.

If you are caught by extreme winds or flying debris:

- Pull over as quickly and safely as possible, out of traffic lanes.
- Stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on.
- Keep your head below the windows.
- Cover your head with your hands, a coat, blanket, or cushion if available.
- If you can safely get noticeably lower than the roadway, leave your vehicle and lie flat in that area while covering your head.

Never seek shelter under a bridge or overpass. Overpasses can create traffic hazards and offer little protection from flying debris. The National Weather Service also warns that wind speeds can increase under overpasses.

Water Safety Reminder

Being around water can be especially dangerous for young children. Children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water, and it can happen quickly and quietly.

Drowning is preventable. Help keep children safe by following these water safety tips:

- Always watch children in or near water. Never leave them unattended, even for a short time.
- Install safety devices such as barriers, covers, and alarms around pools and spas.
- Learn to swim and teach children how to swim.
- Make sure pools and spas have compliant drain covers, and teach children to stay away from drains.
