Press Release: McDowell County Schools Names Bill Hillier Jr. Head Baseball Coach and Head of Baseball Operations

McDowell County Schools is proud to announce the appointment of William "Bill" Hillier Jr. as the new Head Baseball Coach at McDowell High School and Head of Baseball Operations.

Coach Hillier brings more than 25 years of baseball coaching and educational experience to McDowell County, including an accomplished tenure as Head Baseball Coach and Physical Education teacher at Asheville High School. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a commitment to excellence, player development, and building programs that emphasize character, discipline, and success both on and off the field.

Prior to leading Asheville High School's baseball program, Hillier served on coaching staffs at several NCAA Division I institutions, including Duke University, Wake Forest University, and UNC Asheville. He has been recognized as Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times and Western North Carolina Coach of the Year, while helping dozens of student-athletes advance to collegiate baseball opportunities.

"I am honored and excited to be named the next Head Baseball Coach at McDowell High School," said Hillier. "McDowell has long been a program that I have admired and respected because of its tradition, history, and commitment to excellence. The opportunity to lead such a respected program is one that I do not take lightly.

"I am also humbled to follow Coach Alex Smith, whose leadership and dedication have helped build a strong foundation for McDowell Baseball. I have great respect for what he has accomplished and look forward to building upon that success.

“While leaving Asheville is difficult, I am incredibly proud of what our players, coaches, and especially Coach Jesse Swain and I were able to build together. The relationships I formed and the experiences I shared during my time there will always be special to me.”

"I am enthusiastic about this next challenge and excited for my family to become part of the McDowell community. My goal is to represent McDowell County with a baseball program that reflects the values of accountability, integrity, humility, and hard work. We will strive to develop not only successful players, but outstanding young men who make their families, school, and community proud.

"Thank you to Dr. Grit, Mr. Marsh, Mrs. Dowdle, Mrs. Widmann, and the Board of Education for believing in me. I look forward to getting started and working alongside our student-athletes, families, faculty, alumni, and supporters as we continue the proud tradition of McDowell Baseball."

McDowell County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tracy Grit expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Coach Hillier to the district's leadership team.

"Coach Hillier's track record of developing successful student-athletes, building strong programs, and fostering meaningful relationships makes him an outstanding fit for McDowell County Schools," said Grit. "His experience, leadership, and commitment to educational athletics will be tremendous assets as we continue to grow opportunities for our students and strengthen our baseball programs across the district."

In his role as Head of Baseball Operations, Hillier will provide leadership and support for baseball programs throughout McDowell County Schools while overseeing the continued success and growth of the McDowell High School baseball program.

McDowell County Schools looks forward to welcoming Coach Hillier and his family to the Titan community and beginning an exciting new chapter in the proud tradition of McDowell Baseball.

📢 EC Parent Training Update

The EC Parent Training scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 PM has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Members of the McDowell County Schools Exceptional Children's Department will be attending the OEC Summer Institute, an important professional development opportunity that supports our continued growth and learning as educators.

Our Beginning Teacher of the Week is Mrs. Sadie Letke from Foothills Community School.

In her first year at Foothills Community School, Sadie Letke has already made an extraordinary impact on our students, staff, and school community. As our art teacher, she goes far beyond teaching artistic skills-she creates a learning environment where students are encouraged to express their individuality, explore their interests, and find their own creative voice.
Ms. Letke incorporates a variety of artistic modalities into her instruction, ensuring that all students have opportunities to engage, create, and succeed. She values student choice and empowers students to take ownership of their learning, resulting in authentic and meaningful artistic experiences. Her classroom is a place where creativity thrives, and every student's unique perspective is celebrated. Her students adore her, not only for her engaging lessons but also for the genuine care and encouragement she shows each day. She has built strong relationships with students and quickly become a trusted, positive influence in their lives. Beyond the art room, Ms. Letke consistently steps up to support our school in countless ways. Michalyn is an Exceptional Children (EC) teacher who consistently goes above and beyond to meet the unique needs of her students. She carefully plans instruction to ensure all students can access and engage with the curriculum. She collaborates regularly with general education teachers, support staff, and families to promote student success. Michalyn closely monitors student progress and uses data to make informed instructional decisions that support growth. She advocates for her students by ensuring their accommodations, modifications, and services are implemented effectively. She creates a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and respected. Michalyn demonstrates patience, compassion, and flexibility while addressing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. Our Beginning Teacher of the Week is Mrs. Felicia Rutherford from East McDowell Middle School.

Mrs. Rutherford consistently creates a positive and engaging learning environment where students feel valued, supported, and connected. Each year, she takes the time to learn about her students' interests, building meaningful relationships that promote both academic and personal growth. This year, she embraced the transition to teaching Social Studies and successfully collaborated with the Science teacher to implement an every-other-week schedule. Over the past three years, Mrs. Rutherford has demonstrated tremendous growth and dedication as she completed her Beginning Teacher journey. During this time, she has become a trusted mentor and supportive colleague, as well as a nurturing presence for both students and staff. Her commitment to building relationships, embracing new challenges, and supporting the entire school community has made a lasting impact on EMMS. Mrs. Carter has embraced her role as the 8th-grade
Exceptional Children (EC) teacher with remarkable skill and dedication. She brings a deep understanding of how to motivate and support her students, creating an environment that encourages them to challenge themselves and achieve their best. Her unique combination of high expectations, confidence, and genuine care inspires students to put forth an impressive amount of effort and perseverance. As she approaches her final year as a Beginning Teacher, Mrs. Carter has already demonstrated the professionalism, leadership, and initiative of a seasoned educator. She consistently steps up to suppert both the 8th-grade team and the broader EMMS community, making a positive impact on students and colleagues alike. Our Beginning Teacher of the Week is Mr. Hunter Farris from McDowell Academy for Innovation.

Hunter jumped in mid-year and hit the ground running. If you had visited his classroom and observed a lesson, you would never have guessed he was a beginning teacher. He operated like a seasoned professional. He seemed to be a natural at building trust and relationships with students, comfortable with classroom management and student engagement.
