The Marion Police Department would like to remind our community that we will be placing additional focus on traffic safety, specifically regarding illegal J-turns and motorists failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
Kansas law requires drivers to obey all traffic control devices and prohibits unsafe turning movements, including improper J-turns (K.S.A. 8-1548). Additionally, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked or unmarked crosswalks (K.S.A. 8-1533).
The City of Marion also has a local ordinance addressing J-turns. Under Marion City Code 14-201, J-turns are prohibited. The ordinance states that it is unlawful for a driver of any motor vehicle or motorcycle to execute a J-turn on any street as defined by city code. A J-turn is defined as making a U-turn in order to park on the opposite side of any street marked with a centerline.
Our goal is not to issue citations, but to help ensure the safety of our residents, visitors, and families. We ask all motorists to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and watch for pedestrians, especially in high-traffic and school areas.
We appreciate the continued support from our community as we work together to keep Marion safe.
