Sirens were activated a short time ago, Sunday evening due to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. There was a potential for a tornado in that storm.

The storm moved away from Marion, to the east and the sirens were canceled. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until midnight Sunday night.

Hello everyone,

With the beginning of summer, the nicer weather, and the kids all being out of school there are a lot more bicycle, scooter, electric bicycle, and electric scooter riders out enjoying the beautiful start to summer. We just want to remind everyone that the rules of the road apply to everyone from bicycle riders and all the way to vehicle drivers. We ask that everyone take the time to familiarize themselves with what those rules include such as coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. Parents, we ask that you speak with your children and make sure they are fully aware of what the rules are and are taking proper safety measures. Also, we ask that if you have a teen driver that you speak with them as well about being safe on the road. We also ask that anyone who drives just considers the increased number of pedestrians and riders that will be out during the summer and to be extra cautious. Our goal is for everyone to be safe and have a wonderful, memorable summer.

Thank you all for your time and be safe!

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT ⚠️

There is the potential for dangerous storms to move through our area this evening. We encourage everyone to stay weather aware, keep an eye on local forecasts, and have a plan in place in case severe weather develops.

If shelter is needed, the basement at City Hall will be open and available to the public. Access to the basement can be made through the doors located on the east side of City Hall.

Please use caution this evening and do not ignore severe weather warnings. We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

Stay safe!

The Marion Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that there is no parking allowed on the west side of Elm St. between Main and Lawrence St between 8:00 AM and 1:00PM on Sundays.

We understand that Sunday morning church services can create busy parking conditions in the area. However, this restriction is necessary to ensure that emergency vehicles have clear and immediate access if they are needed.

Keeping these lanes open helps us respond quickly and safely to emergencies something that benefits the entire community.

Today was one of those days that reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

The Marion Police Department had the honor of being invited to a very special birthday party to surprise a young man who dreams of becoming a police officer someday. Seeing the excitement on his face when Chief Slater arrived was something we won’t forget. Moments like that truly mean the world to us.

We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a small part of such a big day, and we want to wish him a very happy birthday! We have no doubt that with that kind of passion and heart, he has a bright future ahead.

The Marion Police Department would like to remind our community that we will be placing additional focus on traffic safety, specifically regarding illegal J-turns and motorists failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.

Kansas law requires drivers to obey all traffic control devices and prohibits unsafe turning movements, including improper J-turns (K.S.A. 8-1548). Additionally, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked or unmarked crosswalks (K.S.A. 8-1533).

The City of Marion also has a local ordinance addressing J-turns. Under Marion City Code 14-201, J-turns are prohibited. The ordinance states that it is unlawful for a driver of any motor vehicle or motorcycle to execute a J-turn on any street as defined by city code. A J-turn is defined as making a U-turn in order to park on the opposite side of any street marked with a centerline.

Our goal is not to issue citations, but to help ensure the safety of our residents, visitors, and families. We ask all motorists to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and watch for pedestrians, especially in high-traffic and school areas.

We appreciate the continued support from our community as we work together to keep Marion safe.

❄️ Winter Storm Safety Message ❄️

The Marion Police Department wants to remind everyone to stay warm and remain at home if possible during this winter storm. Hazardous road conditions and extreme cold can make travel dangerous.

If you must go out, please use caution, dress appropriately for the weather, and allow extra time. Check on family, friends, and neighbors—especially the elderly—and make sure everyone has a safe way to stay warm.

Your safety is our top priority. Please stay home, stay warm, and stay safe during this storm.

The Marion Police Department would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who donated items during our Fill-A-Cruiser event! Your generosity will make a huge difference for families in our community this holiday season.

A special shout-out to the amazing team at Barkman Honey for their incredibly generous donation of gifts.

And for everyone wondering… yes, the K9 pictured with us is adorable — but no, she is not one of the donation items. 🐾😉 We’re definitely keeping that one!

Thank you again, Marion, for making this year’s event a sweet success! 💙🚓
