Sunscreen and Sun Protection for Babies and Toddlers

We're so excited for the warm, sunny months! ☀️

As you and your family start enjoying the sun and spending more time outside, we want to remind you about the importance of sun protection!

🧴 Here are some helpful tips to keep your little ones safe in the sun this summer:

🌴 Instead of sunscreen, keep babies 6 months and under in shaded areas and use sun-protective clothing items to protect their skin.
🧢 Utilize sun-protection accessories like sunhats and sunglasses.
🧴 Use baby-safe sunscreens with mineral filters to prevent skin irritation.
🏖️ Reapply! Make sure you take breaks in outdoor play to reset and reapply sunscreen, especially after swimming.

🦟 Intern Spotlight 🦟

We would like to introduce our new Mosquito Surveillance Intern, Riley Shaffer! He has begun placing mosquito traps throughout the city and county to test for viruses spread by mosquitoes.

We ask that if you see one of our traps, please do not disturb them. In order to get an accurate representation of the mosquitoes and viruses that may be living in our community, we need these traps to function properly. If you see a trap that has been vandalized, please contact us.

These traps will be monitored on an ongoing basis throughout the season and we will notify the public of any viruses detected.

🦟 Mosquito Bite Prevention & Awareness 🌿

Mosquito season is here—and so is the need to protect yourself from bites. While most mosquito bites are just itchy and annoying, some mosquitoes can carry diseases like West Nile virus, which is the most commonly reported mosquito-borne illness in Ohio.

Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to breed, which means prevention starts right at home.

Here’s how to protect yourself:
🧴 Use EPA-approved insect repellent when spending time outdoors
👕 Wear long sleeves and pants, especially around dawn and dusk
🪟 Keep window and door screens in good repair
💧 Empty standing water around your home at least once a week:
• Buckets
• Bird baths
• Flowerpot saucers
• Kiddie pools
• Gutters
• Old tires

Reducing mosquito breeding sites around your home is one of the best ways to protect your family and your neighborhood.

Stay bite-free this summer and do your part to help keep our community healthy 🦟☀️
