We're excited to announce a Summer Program right here in Smyth County!

This summer, 20 students (grades 8-11) will have an opportunity to participate in an immersive criminal justice program designed to expose students to careers in law enforcement, courts, corrections, and public service.

The program is completely free. Students will receive breakfast, lunch, and a custom polo shirt.

Special thanks to the Smyth County Community Foundation and the drug dealers whose seized assets helped fund this opportunity. Instead of fueling crime, those funds are now being reinvested into creating opportunities and giving hope to the next generation of Smyth County leaders. Apply today by sending an email to [email protected].

Seniors from Marion Senior High School put their advocacy skills to the test today during the final Courtroom-to-Classroom program of the semester.

Students stepped into the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors—gaining firsthand experience with courtroom procedure, trial strategy, and the weight of real-world decision-making. Programs like this are designed to do more than educate, they aim to build critical thinking, accountability, and respect for the justice system.

Convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child. Virginia Sentencing Guidelines recommended probation and no active incarceration due to otherwise clean criminal history, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

David Kirkland, 45, of Marion was convicted Thursday in Smyth County, VA of taking indecent liberties with a child.

The charge is classified as a violent felony by the Code of Virginia. In addition to lifetime s*x offender registration, the charge carries up to a maximum penalty of five years in the state penitentiary.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is seeking active prison time.

“Protecting the innocent is among the highest duties of this Office, and we will continue that mission without apology or hesitation," said Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip “Bucky” Blevins.

Kirkland, who remains held without bond, is scheduled for sentencing June 30.

Students from Northwood and Chilhowie High Schools came to the courthouse today for Courtroom-to-Classroom. This immersive experience allowed students to move beyond theory and engage in a mock trial - where Chilhowie students assumed the role of prosecutors and presented a case against a Northwood student, while a jury of their peers rendered judgment.

“We began this program with two core objectives: first, to give our students a behind the scenes look at how courts operate, and second to promote awareness that deters future criminal misconduct,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Blevins.
