The 5th Annual Williamson County Traffic Safety Event will be held on March 19, 20, 21, and 22, 2013. This event is designed to supplement and reinforce classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction for Driver’s Education students. This event uses presentations and active participation to deliver important safe-driving information to the students. Our event is sponsored by local businesses and corpor

ations and the Illinois Department of Transportation, allowing the schools to participate with no cost to the schools or students. Nearly 900 Driver's Education students from 17 area High Schools participated in presentations that cover occupant restraint, impaired driving, distracted driving, motorcycle awareness, work-zone safety, railroad crossing safety, and the "No-Zones" and blind spots of semi-trucks and passenger vehicles. We divide the students into six groups, and each group rotates through each presentation. There is no cost to the schools. The effectiveness of our event is apparent. Our first event was held in 2009. That year, the number of 16 year-old drivers involved in crashes in Williamson County dropped by 40%. This group of drivers maintained their lower crash rates as 17 year-old's in 2010 and the new group of 16 year-old drivers also showed a significantly reduced rate of crashes. We've been told of students who attended our event and later told their parents that they want more practice before they drive on their own. We've also heard from parents whose young drivers talk about what they learned at our event one, or even two years ago. It seems to be working.

The newest addition to Williamson County Traffic Safety Days is an augmented reality distracted driving education simulator where students can safely experience how texting effects their driving. Spoiler alert: it’s not good! Big thanks to State Farm for supporting this addition. We are proud to be the first event in Illinois to offer this!

The 10th Annual Williamson County Traffic Safety Days has come to a close with students from Gallatin Co, Carrier Mills-Stonefort, Vienna, Galatia, Harrisburg, Pope Co, AGAPE, Johnston City, and Anna-Jonesboro. Not only did we cover the dangers of distracted driving or driving impaired this week, but we also brought awareness to things we see on our daily drives like motorcycles, trains, and construction zones.

Wearing a seatbelt may seem like a small meaningless task when getting into a vehicle but this roll over simulator shows the students exactly what would happen if they were involved in an accident without their seatbelt.
