It was an honor to attend the ribbon cutting of the new Food City in The Town of Marion, Virginia!

Food City has been part of Smyth County, Virginia for more than 30 years, and this beautiful new store represents another significant investment in our community. It’s a huge upgrade and something our entire community can be proud to see open its doors!

Under the leadership of Steve Smith, Food City has maintained a caring, community focused approach that you can see throughout the organization. His commitment to giving back to the communities Food City serves goes far beyond simply operating a grocery store. From supporting local organizations and community events to stepping up when neighbors are in need, that commitment has made a lasting impact throughout our region.

Businesses that continue to invest locally help strengthen our community, create jobs, and provide opportunities for the people who call this area home.

Congratulations to the entire Food City team on the opening of this new location! Here’s to more than 30 years of serving Smyth County, and hopefully another 100 years of continued commitment to our community!

NO ONE FIGHTS HUNGER ALONE!

Last year, my office set a statewide record for monetary donations during the Commissioners & Cans Food and Fund Drive, raising more than $2,500 and earning the title of statewide champion.

This year, with our Feeding the Fight campaign, we challenged ourselves to do even more, and once again, Smyth County answered the call!

🥫 1,341 pounds of food collected
💵 $4,700 in monetary donations

Every pound of food collected stayed right here in Smyth County and was delivered to the First United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Marion, helping stock their shelves for our neighbors who need it.

The $4,700 in monetary donations went to Feeding Southwest Virginia/Feeding Southwest Virginia to help provide meals, with those resources coming back to help families throughout our local community.

And that $4,700 goes a LONG way. For every $1 donated, approximately 2–3 meals can be provided. That means our monetary donations alone have the ability to provide approximately 9,400–14,100 meals!

I also want to give a very special thank you to my staff. They embraced this effort from the beginning and put in a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes, collecting and organizing donations, helping with events, working with our collection locations, and doing whatever was needed to make this campaign successful. I’m incredibly proud of the way they stepped up, not because they had to, but because they care about the community we serve.

And to every business, church, civic organization, elected official, sponsor, collection location, volunteer, and individual who donated food or money, attended our wrestling fundraiser, shared our posts, or helped spread the word… THANK YOU! It’s organizations and people like you, that help make Smyth County, Virginia !

While I am certainly proud of our 2025 statewide championship, Feeding the Fight was never (and will never be) about winning a competition. It is about bringing people together for something bigger. It is about neighbors helping neighbors and showing what can happen when an entire community decides to step into the fight against hunger.

NO ONE FIGHTS HUNGER ALONE.

Smyth County showed that this past August!

For those interested, we will know statewide results later in September at the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Annual Conference.

It was truly a blessing to be able to drop off 1,341 pounds of food today at the pantry!

A HUGE Thank You to Bradley Powers - Smyth County Commissioner of the Revenue and his office for collecting 1341 lbs of food to the First UMC Food Pantry today! And, thank you so much to our faithful volunteers that work tirelessly to fight hunger and food insecurity in our area.

Today, I had the opportunity to attend Feeding Southwest Virginia/Feeding Southwest Virginia’s Elected Official Day to volunteer and spend time learning more about the incredible work being done every day to fight hunger across Southwest Virginia.

It was great to join elected officials from across our region, including Congressman Morgan Griffith, State Senators Todd Pillion and Travis Hackworth, Mayor Jake Holmes, Washington County Commissioner of the Revenue April Hamby Crabtree, Scott County Treasurer Kevin Helms, the legendary Bristol Sheriff Tyrone Foster and many others who came together in support of this important mission.

For me, this one hits especially close to home. Through our annual Commissioners & Cans campaign and this year’s Feeding the Fight effort, I’ve seen firsthand just how generous our community can be when we rally around our neighbors.

Hunger doesn’t stop at a town, county, or district line, and neither should our willingness to help.

I’m proud that our office and our community continue to support Feeding Southwest Virginia and our local food banks, and I’m grateful for everyone across the region who is willing to work together to make a difference.

As we’ve said throughout Feeding the Fight: No One Fights Hunger Alone.

💪🥫 When employees come together to help their community, it deserves to be recognized!

A huge THANK YOU to Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company in Atkins and, especially, their employees for coming together and making a generous food donation to our 2026 Feeding the Fight Food & Fund Drive!

What makes this donation so special is the people behind it. These employees chose to step up, give back, and help make sure food gets into the hands of families and individuals in our community who need it.

That willingness to help says a lot about the people who make up a company. Community isn’t just where you work, it’s where you live, raise your families, know your neighbors, and lend a hand when someone needs one.

Every item they collected will help support Feeding Southwest Virginia/Feeding Southwest Virginia and our local food banks, and when you combine their generosity with donations coming in from across Smyth County, those individual acts of kindness become something much bigger.

To the employees of Utility: THANK YOU! Thank you for caring about your neighbors, for taking the time to give, and for showing what can happen when a group of people decides to make a difference together.

Companies can support a cause, but it’s PEOPLE who make a community. And these employees showed up!

Bradley’s Funeral Home has a long history of being there for the people of our area. Whether it’s supporting a local cause, lending a hand to an organization, or simply being there for a family during one of life’s most difficult moments, helping others has always been at the heart of what they do.
So, when it came to our effort to fight hunger, it was no surprise to see them step up once again.
Their generous contribution will help support Feeding Southwest Virginia/ Southwest Virginia and our local food banks, providing food and resources for families and individuals throughout our region who could use a helping hand.
One of my favorite parts of this drive has been seeing just how many people and businesses genuinely care about their neighbors. Bradley’s Funeral Home is another great example of what community means here in Smyth County... when someone needs help, you show up.

There’s something especially fitting about one of our local grocery stores joining this effort by doing what they do best helping put food on the table.

The food donated by Food City will help support Feeding Southwest Virginia/Feeding Southwest Virginia and our local food banks, getting much-needed items into the hands of individuals and families right here in our region.

As this drive continues to grow, I’m reminded over and over again just how generous our community is. Businesses large and small, churches, civic organizations, and individuals have all stepped up with one common goal: helping our neighbors who need it.

I can’t thank Smyth County Moose Lodge 1004 - New enough for their monetary donation today!
The Moose has always been about community and charity.
They are helping provide between 1,000 and 1,500 meals for Feeding Southwest Virginia/ Feeding Southwest Virginia and our local community.
Cody Parker, their Administrator dropped off the donation today and on Monday I’m heading to pick up their food donations!
If you’d like to donate at the Moose, you have until Monday afternoon.

Both Williams Funeral Home and Crutchfield Monument have long been in the business of serving families and being there for people when they need someone most. Their support of Feeding the Fight carries that same spirit of compassion beyond the services they provide every day and into helping families throughout our community who may be struggling with hunger.

Every contribution to this drive helps provide food and resources through Feeding Southwest Virginia/ Feeding Southwest Virginia and our local food banks, and it has been incredible to watch our local businesses and organizations continue to answer the call.
