September is Baby Safety Month! 🍼
Remember these important tips to keep your infants safe:
-Anchor heavy furniture and TVs to the wall, cover electrical outlets, and install safety gates at both the top and bottom of stairs.
-Never leave a baby unattended in or near water.
-Ensure infant and child car seats are correctly installed and appropriate for the child's height and weight.
-Register all new baby gear directly with manufacturers so you receive urgent safety and recall alerts.

Landmark Meta Settlement Could Deliver Nearly $768 Million to Illinois and New Protections for Children. For years, parents have raised concerns about the impact social media is having on their children.

Now, a landmark settlement could require Facebook and Instagram to pay Illinois nearly $768 million over the next 10 years while implementing stronger protections for children and teens on Facebook and Instagram.

This is an important victory, but our work isn't finished. Illinois must continue fighting for reasonable protections that empower parents and keep children safe online.

I had the opportunity this week to visit "Aid for Women" in Carbondale, representing the 59th Senate District, as well as State Representative Scott Doody of the 118th, for a tour of the facility and to learn more about the services they provide.

Aid for Women is a pro-life organization with locations throughout Illinois that provides women with free pregnancy tests, ultrasound exams, consultations and other support and resources. We also learned about the assistance they can provide to women traveling to Carbondale for services, including help with transportation and overnight accommodations when needed.

For women facing an unexpected pregnancy, having information, support and resources available is important. Aid for Women provides another option for women here in Southern Illinois. Thank you to the staff for taking the time to show us around and share more about the work you are doing in Carbondale.

I cannot thank the many fire departments from across Southern Illinois enough for answering the call and sending trucks, tankers and manpower to Du Quoin yesterday. That mutual aid and the water hauled in by surrounding departments made a tremendous difference. Mayor Josh Downs, the Du Quoin Fire Department, Du Quoin Police Department and everyone involved did an outstanding job managing an incredibly difficult situation, from fighting the fire to controlling traffic and keeping people safe. Firefighters remained on the scene all night due to fires rekindling during the night.

Unfortunately, I have friends in Du Quoin who lost their businesses, and we won't know the full extent of the damage for some time. My heart goes out to every business owner, employee and family affected. Even in the middle of all of this, Southern Illinois showed exactly who we are. Businesses right on the edge of the fire were bringing snacks and water to firefighters. Departments from surrounding communities came without hesitation. Neighbors stepped up to help neighbors.

A terrible situation met with a typical Southern Illinois response — when someone needs help, we show up. Thank you to every firefighter, police officer, first responder, local official, business and community member who helped. God bless Du Quoin and all those affected.

Legislation Signed into Law Makes it Easier to Get Prescriptions Filled. Illinois patients who arrive at a pharmacy only to find their medication is out of stock will now have an easier time getting their prescriptions filled under newly signed legislation.

Senate Bill 3213 expands the types of prescriptions that can be electronically transferred from one pharmacy to another. The new law brings Illinois requirements more closely in line with federal standards, making it easier for patients to transfer prescriptions when needed. It also makes it easier for medical professionals to issue prescriptions after hours.

Pritzker Administration Continues Pattern of Pulling State Resources from Downstate Illinois. How many state facilities and jobs have to disappear before the Pritzker Administration admits Downstate Illinois is being left behind? Logan Correctional Center. Choate. Now there are four more Downstate IDOC facilities. These aren't just buildings on a spreadsheet. They are jobs, families, services, and communities that matter. Governor Pritzker represents the entire state, and Downstate families deserve more than another round of closures, lost jobs, and excuses.

Southern Illinois native Sam Kuhnert, founder and executive director of NubAbility, was recently named Grand Marshal of the 2026 Du Quoin State Fair. Born with one hand, Kuhnert went on to become a three-sport athlete in high school and later pitched college baseball. He has since dedicated much of his life to helping children with limb differences build confidence and pursue their athletic goals. Kuhnert founded NubAbility, a national organization that provides sports camps, coaching and mentorship opportunities for children with limb differences.

Each year, the Gold Star Family Ceremony at the Du Quoin State Fair is a solemn and meaningful reminder of the tremendous sacrifice made by our fallen service members and the families they left behind. 🇺🇸 I was honored to join Gold Star families as they gathered together to remember their loved ones and ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten. We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to those who gave all in service to our country. May we always remember their names, honor their sacrifice, and continue to stand beside the families who carry their legacy forward. ❤️🤍💙
