Community Homeless Solutions

Community Homeless Solutions Community Homeless Solutions has a long and successful history of serving Monterey County.

Serving Monterey and San Benito Counties; Community Homeless Solutions is the largest provider of homeless transitional housing and emergency shelter beds, including shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Formed in 1978, Shelter Plus was created in response to Monterey County’s need for a safe economically viable program to shelter and support people in crisis. Prior to 1978, th

e county did not have an emergency shelter to meet the needs of the growing homeless population. By partnering with the Department of Social and Employment Services, Shelter Plus was able to open the county’s first emergency shelter in Salinas for victims of domestic violence. In 1984, a separate agency named Peninsula Outreach began operating a food service program in Seaside to feed the homeless, offering a soup kitchen and food pantry. Five years later, the agency expanded its services to include housing and opened the first emergency shelter on the Monterey Peninsula for homeless women and children. In 1998, Shelter Plus and Peninsula Outreach merged to form Shelter Outreach Plus The merger of these two nonprofits allowed the new agency to provide more efficient, cost-effective programs for people in crisis in Monterey County, while eliminating duplicative costs and services. In 2015, Shelter Outreach Plus changed its name to Community Homeless Solutions to capture the spirit of our commitment to working with the local community to create solutions for the area’s homeless. Since its inception, Community Homeless Solutions has been Monterey County’s primary provider of support services and housing both for those fleeing domestic violence and for homeless individuals and families. The agency continues to believe that support services and counseling, coupled with being housed in a safe environment, are vital to helping individuals and families make the step by step progression to stable and independent living.

As complicated as homelessness is in every community (at home, nationally, and around the world), it is hard to see headlines like this and wonder if federal raids and arrests are ever the answer for vulnerable populations. Staff working the front lines on this issue at shelters know the disruption caused by any sweeps or raids on encampments. Individual lose everything from identification to medication to personal treasures--and none of that helps in the work to get people services to end their homelessness.

It was unclear how widespread or effective the raids were, after district officials and advocates had spent much of the day trying to clear the camps, urging people to go to shelters ahead of the raids.

We all have strong feelings on these issues--but some of the feelings include heartache that a 64-year old woman is living in a vacant lot. Even when the public doesn't know what "the answers" will be for resolving homelessness, it is important to know all the stories even when they generate discomfort. Because this is uncomfortable, having mixed feelings about homelessness is normal. And we all fear what we don't understand, and that fear can make us act a shade aggressively. So read the story, and feel the feels and keep kindness in your heart and mind.

"A federal judge last month stopped the city from dismantling the makeshift shelter of 64-year-old Evelyn Alfred, which she erected nearly two years ago on an empty strip of land next to a residential neighborhood.

This appears to be the first such injunction since the U.S. Supreme Court let cities crack down on homeless camps in California and beyond.

Volunteers make all the difference!

Community Builders had an opportunity not too long ago to match Community Homeless Solutions with an employee group from Berkley Design Professionals!

Volunteers went above and beyond sprucing up open areas and the basketball court for for the Permanent Supportive Housing community, and arrived with laundry baskets filled with supplies to share with new clients on move-in day.

Shout out to the team for helping new residents finally get the keys to move into safe and sustainable housing!

While not every city or county in California has a homeless shelter, state housing officials estimated a total of around 1,300 shelters in 2021.

We operate TWO of them. Hard work. Proud of our staff, board, partners, and clients.

The Supreme Court’s decision on homelessness will test a shelter system that’s full of problems – and lacking accountability.

Your contributions make a difference!

Our two DV shelters are almost always at 100% capacity. Most clients arrive “in flight”—after law enforcement responds to a 911 call. These individuals had five to ten minutes to gather things before departing for the shelter—and more than half of our clients arrive with small children. The needs of our clients fleeing violence include everything from clothing and shoes to replacing IDs, obtaining legal services, finding/maintaining employment, getting medical care, and finding a new place to live. Last year we delivered support services and over 20,000 nights of safe sleep in our shelter beds (and cribs) in Monterey County. We have a 97% rate of moving our clients into safe, sustainable housing within 90 days. Last year 387 of our DV clients left with a key in their hand for their new, safe housing—and every child left with their favorite toy from the playroom.

"I thought it was too good to be true. I actually called to make sure," Smith said. "We've never been in this situation before. You know, I'm not able to work. My husband's taking care of me right now, so he's not able to work. So yeah, it's just been difficult. I'm so grateful this is real."

It can take months before Section 8 housing applicants are told whether they qualify for the federally subsidized program. On Monday, people were able to apply and get a decision on the spot.
