It’s important our students get the nutrition they need to continue learning and growing which is what started our initiative BONE SOUP.

Bone Soup was born out of a time of tragedy. Towards the end of the Ebola epidemic in 2015, students were allowed back to school after a 9 month hiatus and a debilitating byproduct of the epidemics lockdowns was food insecurity. Without communal markets and and electricity to store and freeze food, children and their parents were starving.

Although our children were thrilled to be back at school, they were listless and unable to focus.

Together, we came up with the idea of making bone broth using would-be discarded bones front the local butcher, and adding nutrient dense moringa, tomato, onions, and sweet potato. This created a highly nutritious signature soup that fed not only 250 students and 400 community members, but also received an unexpected gift of healing. We have countless accounts of the elimination of back pains, chest pains, many body ailments. A child in our village with sickle cell anemia was free from pain for the first time.

This is our miracle soup in our village and is the staple lunch for our students every school day.

Rest in peace beautiful Harijiatu Jalloh, class 4 student at Muddy Lotus Primary in Sierra Leone. This beautiful picture was taken when she dressed up as an African Princess to greet SOSL and friends on a very special occasion. She stood before the entire school and many strangers, held her head up high and welcomed us in a gentle but strong voice. Slowly then, with the ultimate poise, led us to our seats while dropping flower petals along the ground - you have never seen anything sweeter.
You will be missed and never ever forgotten.

Heart surgery kit. Yes, it’s just as beautiful as it sounds. Originally created by to support her son going through an emotionally challenging time, Elizabeth understood that drawing the pain, acknowledging it and erasing is a magical recipe to release trauma and ease the pain.

Thank you for reaching our 63 Brave students how to “handle their hearts”. We love and appreciate you and hope to see in sweet salone again soon.

63 BRAVE is one of Shine On Sierra Leone’s unique community based programs that oversees the support of children orphaned by the Ebola epidemic in Kono.

The 63 BRAVE program has welcomed and nurtured the lives of 63 orphaned children, ranging from 6 years old to 18 years old. Under the support and umbrella of Shine On Sierra Leone, these children live within the safety of community based, appointed caregivers, while moving under the guidance of three local Social Workers. Provided with schooling, a safe place to live, monthly meetings, supported connection, and a sense of community, these children have started down a vital path of growth and have been given an opportunity to reshape their reality.
