78th Aviation Troop Command

78th Aviation Troop Command Colonel Robert B. Gaston, with Command Sgt. Major Claude Ray as his senior enlisted leader, commands the 78th ATC. Our Chinooks were also busy this past year.

The 78th Aviation Troop Command Flies, Fixes, and Fuels Aircraft to provide command and control, air movement, aero-medical evacuation and air assault operations to combatant commanders on the ground around the world and here in the state of Georgia. Stationed at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, the Georgia Army National Guard’s 78th Aviation Troop Command (ATC) is the aviation branch of t

he Georgia
Army Guard. The 78th ATC’s major deployments and redeployments in 2011 included: UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters of Detachment 1, Company C, of the 1-185th deploying to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn; UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters of the 1-171st mobilizing in November for their second deployment to Iraq, this time in support of Operation New Dawn; and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters of the Detachment 1, Company C, 1-111 Medevac mobilizing for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. The most recent aviation unit to deploy involved the UH-60 Black Hawks of Detachment 2, Company C, 1-169th Medevac, which left February 5, 2012, for deployment in Afghanistan. There, under the Army’s 49th and 29th Aviation brigades, its 21 pilots, aircrew, flight medical and support personnel, will provide Medevac support to troops now involved in Operation Enduring Freedom. Among the 78th ATC’s accomplishments in 2011 was Company C, 1-151st Service and Support’s support of Operation New Horizons in the Haiti earthquake relief efforts. On three different occasions they fought forest fires in Southeast Georgia using helicopter buckets to assist in the efforts. They also provided aviation support to the Joint Readiness and Training Center in Fort Polk, La. Additionally, the 78th Aviation Troop Command fielded four new Unmanned Aircraft System aircraft, trained the Soldiers, and deployed them to Afghanistan to support the Global War on Terror.

🚨 NEW ARMY BODY COMPOSITION POLICY IS HERE

Effective 1 July 2026, the Army has implemented Army Directive 2026-13, introducing a new Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) standard for assessing body composition.

Key changes every Soldier should know:

✅ Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is now the ONLY authorized body composition standard.
Height/Weight screening tables have been eliminated.

✅️ The tape test and other body fat assessments are no longer authorized.

✅ The new standard is a WHtR of LESS THAN 0.55. Soldiers with a WHtR of 0.55 or greater will be enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP).

✅ Every Soldier will be assessed at least twice each calendar year.

✅ A confirmation measurement is required if a Soldier initially exceeds the standard before any administrative action is taken.

✅ No Army Fitness Test (AFT) score exempts a Soldier from meeting the body composition standard.

✅ WHtR assessments should be conducted at least 7 days before or after an AFT/CFT whenever possible.

✅ Commanders may direct a WHtR assessment at any time if there is concern that a Soldier does not meet the standard.

✅ Soldiers currently enrolled in the ABCP will no longer have mandatory monthly assessments. Commanders will determine assessment frequency and remove Soldiers from the program as soon as they meet the standard.

📅 Implementation Timeline All Soldiers must have an initial WHtR assessment completed and recorded in ATIS within 90 days of the directive's publication.

The U.S. Army is replacing its legacy height and weight measurement system with the Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) as the Army’s official body composition screening method.

This new directive supports the Army’s goal of maintaining a healthy and ready force. Visit the Army's Tell Your Formation website for more.

Today, with heavy hearts, we said our final farewell to one of our own.

We gathered to honor the life and legacy of CPT Alexis Salvanera, former Commander of Bravo Company, 1-169th Aviation Regiment—a Soldier, a leader, and a valued member of the 78th Aviation Troop Command Family.

Alexis served with dedication, humility, empathy, and a genuine commitment to those she led. Her impact reached far beyond her years of service, touching the lives of Soldiers, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. While her time with us was far too short, her legacy will continue to live on in the people she inspired and the lives she influenced.

To her Family, friends, and fellow Soldiers, please know that you remain in our thoughts and prayers. We stand beside you in your grief, just as we stand together as one Aviation Family.

Today we remember a leader who lived that commitment through her service, and we will never forget her.

Rest easy, Captain Salvanera. Your watch is over. We have the controls.

Congratulations to our Medic Warfighter, Specialist David Stratton, on successfully graduating from the Mountain Warfare Course in the Country of Georgia! 🇬🇪

Over the course of three demanding weeks, SPC Stratton mastered advanced mountaineering skills, including knot systems, climbing, rappelling, river crossings, rope ascension, and mountain movement through challenging terrain. The course culminated with a series of rigorous practical evaluations, testing both technical proficiency and physical endurance in one of the world's most demanding environments.

Beyond the training, the experience also highlighted the incredible partnership between the Georgia Army National Guard and the Country of Georgia. Through shared challenges, cultural exchanges, and unmatched hospitality, this training strengthened not only individual warfighting skills but also the enduring bonds between our two nations.

Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment and for representing 1st Battalion 171st Aviation Regiment GSAB, 78th Aviation Troop Command, and the Georgia Army National Guard with professionalism, resilience, and determination. Well done! 👏🏻

This past Monday, 1LT Aaron Allen, an Army Aviator, and SGT David Boudreaux, a Crew Chief, both assigned to 2-151st Aviation (S&S), made a last-minute decision to fly from Georgia to Missouri on FRIDAY, to participate in the Relay Across America—representing not only Army Aviation, but the spirit of service, teamwork, and commitment that defines our formation.

Together, they completed Segments 159 and 160, covering an incredible 37.5 miles in support of this meaningful event. 🇺🇲

In Army Aviation, success depends on the trust and partnership between pilots and crew chiefs. This event was no different. Their willingness to answer the call, travel across the country on short notice, and accomplish this challenge side by side is a reflection of the teamwork, resilience, and selfless service that our Aviation Warfighters demonstrate every day. 🫡

Thank you, LT Allen and SGT Boudreaux, for proudly representing Georgia Army Aviation. We are incredibly proud of your accomplishment and grateful for the example you continue to set. 🇺🇲
