On February 4, 2025, the mayor of the City of Maricopa, AZ, Mayor Nancy Smith, declared a ‘Black History Month’ Proclamation at the Maricopa City Hall. Vice Mayor Henry Wade worked closely with Mayor Smith and the City of Maricopa City Council to execute this important proclamation. This proclamation confirms the positive impact of diversity on social identity which includes racial and cultural identity. More importantly, it substantiates the importance of the initial adoption of Black History Month in 1976, in order to honor and affirm the importance of the history of African Americans in the state of Arizona and all over the United States.
During the presentation of the proclamation, Vice Mayor Wade dedicated the proclamation to JoAnna Cooper Vanderpool. Ms. Vanderpool was a culture keeper and a lead organizer of the Maricopa Juneteenth Celebrations. Ms. Vanderpool passed away in December of 2024, and this dedication was one of many ways to honor her love, commitment, and work in the City of Maricopa.
