🏃‍♀️ National Monsoon Awareness Week: Recreation Safety During Monsoon Season ⛈️

Arizona's monsoon season doesn't mean outdoor fun has to stop, it just means being prepared before heading out.

Whether you're hiking, biking, visiting a park, attending a sporting event, or enjoying time outdoors, always keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to change your plans if storms develop.

🌩️ Check the weather before leaving home.
📱 Have a way to receive weather alerts.
🏃 Know where to seek shelter if a storm approaches.
⚡ If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately.
💧 Stay hydrated and be prepared for extreme heat.
🌬️ Be aware of sudden strong winds, blowing dust, and flash flooding.
🚫 Never enter flooded washes or low-water crossings.

Monsoon storms can develop quickly, turning a fun day outdoors into a dangerous situation in minutes. Stay weather aware, have a plan, and prioritize safety while enjoying all that our community has to offer.

🌵 National Monsoon Awareness Week: Dust Storm Safety 🌵

Dust storms are one of the most dangerous hazards of Arizona's monsoon season. They can develop quickly, reducing visibility to near zero with little warning and creating extremely hazardous driving conditions.

If you encounter a dust storm while driving, remember: Pull Aside, Stay Alive.

🚗 Pull completely off the roadway as far as possible.
💡 Turn off all lights, including your headlights.
🛑 Set your emergency brake.
⚠️ Take your foot off the brake pedal so your tail lights are not illuminated and mistaken as a guide by other drivers.

Never try to drive through a dust storm. The safest place to be is safely off the road until conditions improve.

💨 National Monsoon Awareness Week: Downburst Winds 💨

Monsoon storms don't just bring rain—they can also produce powerful downburst winds, sudden bursts of air that rush toward the ground and spread outward at high speeds.

These abrupt and often dangerous winds are common during Arizona's monsoon season and can cause property damage, knock down trees and power lines, and create areas of blowing dust that reduce visibility for drivers.

⚠️ Downburst winds can reach 60, 70, or even 100 mph.

When thunderstorms are in the area:
🌩️ Stay weather aware and monitor forecasts.
🏠 Secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne.
🚗 Use extra caution when driving, especially if blowing dust develops.
🌳 Stay away from trees, power lines, and other objects that could be damaged by strong winds.

⚡ National Monsoon Awareness Week: Lightning Safety ⚡

Monsoon storms can develop quickly, bringing dangerous lightning that can strike miles away from the storm itself. That's why today's National Monsoon Awareness Week topic is Lightning Safety.

🌩️ Check the forecast before heading outdoors and consider postponing activities if thunderstorms are expected.
📱 Have a reliable way to receive weather alerts.
🏠 If a thunderstorm approaches, seek shelter in a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle.
⚡ Avoid using corded electronic devices and stay away from plumbing, as lightning can travel through electrical wiring and pipes.

Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors!

Stay weather aware, have a plan, and respect the power of the monsoon.

🌧️ National Monsoon Awareness Week: Flash Floods & Debris Flows 🌧️

Monsoon storms can produce intense rainfall that triggers flash floods and debris flows within minutes. Even if it's not raining where you are, water, mud, and debris can travel far from the storm and create dangerous conditions with little warning.

Areas in and below recent burn scars are especially vulnerable, as loose soil and vegetation can quickly be swept downhill during heavy rain.

Stay weather aware, avoid flooded roadways and low-water crossings. Just six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.

Respect the Storm. Ready. Set. Monsoon.

☀️ National Monsoon Awareness Week: Extreme Heat ☀️

Arizona’s monsoon season doesn’t just bring storms, it also brings dangerous heat. As we recognize National Monsoon Awareness Week, today’s focus is on staying safe during periods of extreme heat.

💧 Drink plenty of water and electrolytes
🧢 Wear a hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, light-colored clothing
🧴 Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
🏠 Stay indoors with air conditioning or fans when possible
⏰ Limit strenuous outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
🌳 If you work outside, take frequent breaks in the shade
🚗 Look Before You Lock: Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle

Extreme heat can develop quickly and become life-threatening. Take precautions, be sure to check on family, friends, and neighbors, and stay weather aware all season long.

This week at City Council, Mayor Nancy Smith issued a proclamation recognizing June 2026 as Men’s Health & Mental Health Month in the City of Maricopa.
The proclamation highlights the importance of preventive care, early detection, and mental health awareness—reminding our community that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Let’s continue working together to support healthier lives and break the stigma around mental health.

☀️It’s Don’t Fry Day 🧴
Before heading outside, protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
✔️ Apply SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure
✔️ Reapply every 2 hours — and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off
✔️ Spend time in the shade when possible
✔️ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing for extra protection
Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still cause damage. A few simple steps can help keep you safe all summer long.
