Thank you for sharing the history of this building. We are so glad to continue its story in downtown Chipley.
Some buildings are old. Some buildings are historic. And then there are buildings like the Porter Building at 1368 N. Railroad Avenue in downtown Chipley—buildings that have been part of the community for so long that they almost feel like they’ve always been there.
Built in 1900, this structure is more than 125 years old and is one of the most distinctive commercial buildings still standing in downtown Chipley. If you look closely at the front, you can still see the details that make it special—the decorative brickwork, the raised center section, the small pinnacles along the roofline, and the circular openings near the top. Above the entrance is another little piece of history: a plate marked “A.R. Wells 1900.”
That means the building had already been standing for about 20 years when the Roaring Twenties began, more than 40 years when America entered World War II, and more than 60 years before Walmart even existed.
When this building first opened, downtown Chipley looked very different. The railroad was at the center of daily life, and Railroad Avenue was one of the busiest places in town. Trains carried people, freight, timber, crops, mail, and supplies through the community, while businesses lined the streets nearby. The Porter Building stood right in the middle of it all.
One of its earliest known businesses was Camp Hardware, which operated here into the 1920s. Imagine Chipley families walking through these doors more than a century ago looking for tools, household supplies, and things they needed for farms and homes. Later, the building became home to Standifer Millinery Store, then Standifer Jewelers, and by the mid-1930s, Jack Shiver’s Variety Store.
That alone tells you how much life has passed through this one building.
Hardware. Hats. Jewelry. Everyday goods. Different businesses, different generations, but the same building.
As the years passed, downtown changed around it. Cars replaced wagons. Shopping habits changed. New businesses came and went. Buildings were remodeled, demolished, or forgotten. But the Porter Building remained.
By the 1990s and early 2000s, many people knew it as the Historic Chipley Antique Mall. There was something almost perfect about that—a historic building filled with antiques and pieces of the past. People could walk through a building from 1900 while shopping for items that carried their own stories from generations before.
Eventually, the building found another purpose, and today it is home to the Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
And in a strange way, that brings the building’s history full circle.
More than 100 years ago, people came here to buy hardware and supplies for their homes. Today, people still walk through these doors looking for furniture, building materials, household goods, and other items that can be given a second life—all while supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission of helping families with housing.
There is something very fitting about that.
A building that has been reused and preserved for more than a century is now home to an organization that believes in giving things another purpose.
The Porter Building is important to Chipley not just because of its age, but because of everything it represents. It is a surviving piece of the early railroad town Chipley once was. It has seen the Great Depression, two World Wars, generations of local businesses, countless changes to downtown, and more than a century of people walking past its doors.
And it is still here.
The next time you drive down Railroad Avenue, take a second and really look at this building. Look at the details near the roof. Look at the old brickwork. Look at the porch and the windows. Then imagine what this street looked like in 1900 when trains were pulling into town and Chipley was still young.
You’re not just looking at an old storefront.
You’re looking at 126 years of Chipley history still standing in the heart of downtown.
And that is something worth preserving. ❤️
