On Friday, Sept. 11, the City of Marco Island, in partnership with the Marco Island Fire Rescue Foundation, dedicated and unveiled its new 9/11 memorial at Fire Station 50.

The memorial provides our community with a permanent place to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call that day.

During the ceremony, we also recognized members of the Marco Island community and City personnel who responded to the attacks and supported recovery efforts in the difficult days and months that followed. Their firsthand stories and continued commitment to service ensure that the legacy of 9/11 is never forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful dedication and helped us honor the lives, courage and sacrifices forever connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

Honoring 34 Years of Dedicated Community Service

During its Sept. 10 meeting, the Marco Island City Council recognized resident Ruth McCann for her remarkable 34 years of dedicated service to the Marco Island Civic Association.

Throughout her distinguished tenure, Ruth provided steadfast leadership, professionalism and invaluable institutional knowledge while supporting MICA’s mission to preserve neighborhood character, uphold community standards and enhance the quality of life on Marco Island.

Her contributions extended throughout the community, including coordinating candidate forums during City Council elections and serving on the City’s 25th anniversary celebration planning committee, which organized a week of special events for residents.

The City of Marco Island extends its sincere appreciation to Ruth for her decades of service, integrity and unwavering commitment to the island she has tirelessly championed. Her lasting impact will continue to benefit our community for generations to come.

September Proclaimed Hunger Action Month in Marco Island

At its Sept. 10 meeting, the Marco Island City Council officially proclaimed September 2026 as Hunger Action Month, recognizing the importance of raising awareness about hunger and taking action to address food insecurity in our community.

The proclamation also commends Our Daily Bread Food Pantry for its exceptional commitment to providing essential food assistance to individuals and families in need. Through the dedication of its volunteers and supporters, the organization continues to make an invaluable difference throughout our community.

The City of Marco Island thanks Our Daily Bread Food Pantry for its tireless service and encourages residents to learn more about hunger in our community and how they can help.

For some, Sept. 11 is history.

For members of our Marco Island family, it is a memory they carry every day.

Twenty-five years ago, first responders ran toward unimaginable danger as others searched for a way out. Among them were men and women who would later make Marco Island their home and continue their lives of public service within our community.

Today, we have the privilege of working alongside former members of the NYPD and FDNY who responded on Sept. 11, 2001, and during the difficult days, weeks and months that followed. They are more than part of history. They are our coworkers, our friends and an enduring reminder of what courage, sacrifice and service truly mean.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost. We honor the first responders who answered the call. We stand with every family that continues to carry the weight of that day.

Twenty-five years later, the uniforms may be different, and the city they serve may have changed, but their commitment to others remains.

Marco Island remembers.

Please help us welcome the City of Marco Island’s new Code Enforcement boat to the community!

Despite some of the rumors floating around, this boat will not be pulling anyone over for speeding through the canals. It is not a law enforcement boat and is separate from the Marco Island Police Department’s police vessels.

One of its main focuses is helping protect Marco Island’s water quality. The boat allows Code Enforcement staff to access canals and shoreline areas to identify, document and address illicit discharges, construction debris and other issues that could affect our waterways.

In fact, just this week, staff issued several Notices of Violation related to illicit discharges. In another incident, construction debris broke through a boom-style containment barrier and began entering a nearby waterway.

Simply put, this boat is here to help keep unwanted materials out of our water, not to hand out tickets on it.

The Code Enforcement boat will also serve the community in several other capacities, which we will continue sharing with you as it gets to work!

Join us as Marco Island remembers and honors the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the strength of our nation 25 years after September 11, 2001.

The City of Marco Island will dedicate its 9/11 25th Anniversary Memorial on Friday, September 11, at 9:30 a.m. at the flagpole outside Marco Island Fire Station 50, 1280 San Marco Road.

A Blue Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Road.

Did you know September is National Preparedness Month?

For Marco Island residents, preparedness is especially important. Whether it is a hurricane, tropical storm, power outage, flooding, or another emergency, having a plan before conditions change can make all the difference.

Make sure your household knows:

• Where you will go if an evacuation is ordered
• How you will receive emergency alerts and updates
• What you will bring, including medications, important documents, and supplies for pets
• How you will stay in touch if family members are separated

Now is also a great time to check your hurricane kit, review your evacuation plan, and make sure your property is prepared.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, our community will come together to honor the lives lost and the heroes who served on September 11, 2001.

While several remembrance events are taking place throughout Collier County, we especially encourage our Marco Island community to attend the two events being held here on the island:

• 9:15 a.m. — 9/11 Memorial Dedication & Ceremony
Marco Island Fire Station, 1280 San Marco Road

• 11 a.m. — 25th Year Remembrance Blue Mass
San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Road
Lunch will follow, provided by the Knights of Columbus.

Additional services and remembrance events are also planned in Collier County, including a morning Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and an evening candlelight remembrance at Fred W. Coyle Freedom Park.

We hope you will join us as we remember those we lost, honor the courage shown that day, and recognize the first responders who continue to serve our communities.
