Be on the look out for stiltgrass, a plant not known to be in Minnesota yet but of concern to invasive species professionals. Stiltgrass is an invasive summer annual that thrives in a variety of habitats. It generally grows up to three feet tall and in dense, thick mats that outcompete and displace native species. The leaves are alternate, lance-shaped, and often have a silvery line of reflective hairs down the length of each leaf, distinguishing it from other look-alikes. The stems are thin, and the roots are fibrous and shallow.
If you find stiltgrass, please report it to EDDMapS. Also, practice preventing the spread of invasive species by brushing off your shoes/boots before entering or leaving a natural area. Visit https://z.umn.edu/ParSciTIPS for more details on stiltgrass and other participatory science projects.
