"At some point, scrutiny becomes obstruction."

This was a very heavy week on the County Council. I'm disgusted by how long it took us to do the right thing to ensure the residents in our Justice Center (1200 adults and 60 children in juvenile) get the healthcare they are Constitutionally entitled to. This editorial does a good job of explaining what happened. May it never happen again.

Two Black elected officials placed health care for nearly 1,300 people — most of them Black — at risk while exposing St. Louis County taxpayers to potentially significant financial liability. St. Louis County leaders are warning of a potential healthcare crisis at the county jail after the council delayed a $2.8 million funding bill.

The move from the county council comes hours after County Executive Sam Page and Public Health Director Dr. Kanika Cunningham said the jail would face a health crisis.

Jail and health department leaders said if the funding isn’t passed, it would mean things like less access to medications, stopping opioid treatments, and more police officers having to drive detainees for medical screenings.

Earlier in the day, Council Chair Rita Heard Days who co-sponsored the bill said she planned to pass it Tuesday. Days held it because Councilwoman Shalonda Webb, the council department liaison for the Department of Public Health, hadn’t had a meeting with Cunningham yet.

🍀Congratulations to all those who worked on and won yesterday’s municipal and school board races across St. Louis County! Running for local office is no small undertaking and it's increasingly challenging. I’m grateful to everyone who stepped up to serve their communities.

🍀 🍀 I also want to share that last week I learned I’ll be running unopposed for my third term. I’m deeply thankful for the continued trust and support—it truly means a lot.

A few years ago I got to paddle the Mississippi River at night and we ended in front of The Arch. Doesn’t it look stunning from this angle and light— a reminder to mix it up from the usual. This 314 day I’m reflecting on the grandeur of this beautiful and complicated place that has been home to my family over many generations. It’s an honor to serve my family, friends, and neighbors here in the 314 ❤️

It's official! Last week I filed to run for re-election. There's so much at stake right now and I’m running again because I believe St. Louis County should be a place where all of us can thrive—and where the voice of the people still matters, especially in the face of growing attacks on our democracy at the state and federal levels. A St. Louis County government satellite office in Chesterfield will close before the end of the month, hours of public access to other offices will be trimmed back, and two swimming pools in need of repairs will stay closed this summer, County Executive Sam Page said Wednesday.

Family members say the man who was killed by a federal officer in Minneapolis was an intensive care nurse at a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital who cared deeply about people and was upset by President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in his city.
